does anyone else have a different promo cd single for this track.....i have two promo cd singles...
they are a&m 75021-7508-2 (promo) 1-but anyway-edit (listed 3:26, runs 3:26) 2-but anyway (listed 4:09, runs 4:08) the above promo cd single has a date of 1990 on the rear panel.....was this song originally issued way back then?? amsad 00242 (promo) 1-but anyway-studio edit guitar (listed 3:00, runs 2:57) 2-but anyway-live edit (listed 3:30, runs 3:29) 3-but anyway-studio edit harp (listed 3:00, runs 2:57) 4-but anyway-studio full version (listed 4:10, runs 4:08) 5-but anyway-live full version (listed 5:55, runs 5:57)...this one states a date of 1996 and....does anyone remember which track got MOST airplay back during it's peak period of late summer 1996.... |

Ed, the song "But Anyway" was originally from the debut album by Blues Traveler, which was, indeed, released in 1990. Of course, they never had a top 40 hit until their 1994 album was released, Four, which featured the other hits you just posted info about ("Run-Around" and "Hook").
When the follow-up album to Four was to be released (Live From the Fall), I suppose the record label didn't want to release a "live" track to radio. Instead they decided to re-release "But Anyway," offering up edits of both the original album version and the newly released live version. Our station always played track 1 from the second promo single you listed, the "Studio Edit-Guitar." |

aaron...good catch.....i just looked at my 2 promo cd singles again tonight, and you are absolutely correct about the years that the promos were issued....i never noticed that...the first one was issued in 1990 and the 2nd in 1996...thanks for the insight..

My recollection is that here in Minneapolis, KDWB (the Top 40) played the live edit and the KEGE (the big alternative station) played the studio version. I'm guessing this was not typical of what happened in most markets, since Top 40s tend to avoid live versions. |
