then (not realizing he was already legendary). He even
named '461 Ocean Boulevard' not realizing tons of fans
would stop by his house in Golden Beach Florida right on
A1A...

Also, after Atlantic's U.S. distribution rights to Cream and ex-members ended (late 1971/early 1972?), Polydor began cranking out these reissues in late 1972:

Cream - Heavy Cream
Eric Clapton - At His Best
Jack Bruce - At His Best
Ginger Baker - At His Best

Each of them 2 LP sets. I bought the Cream and EC. The EC has tracks only from Blind Faith, his first solo album, and Layla. I assume the JB and GB are their post-Cream recordings as well.

As Andrew states, Bell Bottom Blues was released as a single from this EC At His Best. The reason why the 1973 Polydor 45 issue of "Bell Bottom
Blues" was credited to only Eric Clapton (and not the
whole group) was because in 1972 the compilation album
'The History Of Eric Clapton' (Atco USA, Polydor UK)
became a huge seller - Eric's first top-ten album and
introduced the name of "Eric Clapton" to the uninitiated
because it included classic tracks by the Dominos, Cream,
Yardbirds, Blind Faith and more. Later in 1972 when
Polydor USA had the rights to release his material 'Eric
Clapton At His Best' was issued including "Bell Bottom
Blues".

Polydor USA & UK at that time really wanted to establish
the "Eric Clapton" moniker in the public eye as Clapton
was known to try to hide behind the group names he was
in...

The strategy ultimately worked well as his next album of
new material '461 Ocean Boulevard' was a multi-week #1
LP!

I just bought a Polydor pressing of this single (PD 15056),
which is labeled as Eric Clapton, with no mention of Derek.
As far as I can tell, this and the b-side ("Little Wing")
sound like the Layla album versions. The Polydor
catalog number places this around 1972, which seems to
coincide with when Polydor started pressing the album, after
Atco's license.

Anyone know the story as to why this was re-marketed as a
Clapton solo single?

I did recreation a few years ago of the 45 version. As
usual, lol, I didn't take notes. I seem to remember I was
able to fold from stereo to mono and it may have been an
