CD rot progresses until a disc is unreadable. PDO in
England manufactured a bunch of these in the early 90's
but most would be 'rotted out' by now. Only other way
something similar would happen is if a sticky substance
was spilled on the front and when wiping off you took a
layer off. That did happen to me once. Scratches on
label side are detrimental and do cause skipping.

Thanks Gary,

I am considering looking around the forum for a few more oddities in the recordings. I'm also likely to start a few other posts with information like this to see if anyone is interested in recording anomalies.

I'm also going to look for some of the stuff that seems to plague me from time to time, like CD rot. Aaron and I have had a few discussions about that and, I'd like to know if I can find solutions to this or,
if there are any machines that seem to work better with problematic discs. I have the above 4 in my collection. All are excellent
sounding discs and are worth seeking out either as an
overview to the individual artists (even if you may
have other discs by them, the selection of tracks is

The noises on the track in question are present on the
master tape (most likely caused by a noisy pot in the
board that went unnoticed).

The upside to the Patsy Cline volume is it is one of
the few readily available compilations of her work that

MCA/Universal discs
are narrowed for whatever reason.

The 2004 Universal set, The Definitive Collection
contains a number of these narrowed stereo mixes but it
also contains "Imagine That" with the noises fixed by
mastering great, Doug Schwartz. However, the L/R
channels on this CD are reversed from the TimeLife disc
for this particular song. What the proper L/R setup for
it would be is unknown to me.

Both Definitive and the TimeLife sets are still highly
recommended by me for anyone that wants to get an
instant Patsy Cline education.

I have dBpoweramp on a dedicated PC for doing music stuff. (Currently getting set up again.) I had a friend gift me a Focusrite sound interface a few months ago, which also needs to be set up. I don't know if that
will give a better sound in general. Hopefully, I will be able to utilize all it's potential.

I'll note at this point that I did ripp the whole disc to .Wav and, that's where I noticed the problem. Both the .Wav file and just playing the disc in traditional CD fashion have the same result. In many cases,
I will frequently listen to a disc while I'm entering track information. This one is already in the database that fills the fields. So I had a little time to listen more closely. Otherwise, I'd have probably missed the error.

dBpoweramp is a great suggestion!

I also did a bit of searching about the artist while listening. I frequently do that too. Such a tragic story! I always liked her singing, even as a kid. Try ripping with a program that uses Accuraterip to determine if you're getting the 0's and 1's that are really on the disc. I recommend EAC or dbpoweramp for the PC; not sure if there's a Mac equivalent. Thanks for the location note on Country U.S.A. I have that series too but, haven't unpacked it yet. I'll look for that copy and compare.

I just looked on ebay and they have a number of copies up for grabs, some sealed. I might just pick one up to see if this particular disc is just shot.
I haven't noticed any other issues yet but, if I pull out any other artists, I'll be listening more closely.

The only one I don't have but, hopefully will soon is the Charley Pride.
