Summing up:

The absurdly wide stereo mix is the 1968 stereo LP version. It is not at all common on CD.

The narrow stereo mix (the one on most CDs) may date back to 1977. I found the narrow stereo mix on Stax's Johnnie Taylor Chronicle - The Twenty Greatest Hits (1977) on Qobuz. I assume that it matches the CD, and that the CD matches the 1977 release (the back of the CD says "Digitally remastered directly from the original analog master tapes by Joe Tarantino, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA"). And miraculously, the version on Chronicle sounds less muffled than the version on Rhino's Soul Shots!

While Chronicle wasn't released on CD until 1990, I found the narrow stereo mix on CD as far back as Original Sound's Oldies But Goodies Vol. 5 (1986).

So the narrow stereo mix goes back to 1986 at latest, and, if my detective skills are correct, possibly goes back to 1977 or earlier.

Yes, the original 1960s mix was the wide mix as you describe. That style of mix was very prominent in the 60s for sure. I guess at some point, it was
remixed. As to when, I wish I knew - I first heard it on 1988 Rhino CD "Soul Shots Volume 2 A Collection of Sixties Soul Classics".

The 45 was in mono.

I found two stereo versions.

The first is a pretty narrow mix, with everything being centered until a horn blast in the right channel at 0:04. This mix is everywhere, on lots of common compilations.   The oldest compilation I've found with this mix is Original Sound's Oldies But Goodies Vol. 5 (1986), which sounds awful and has its left/right channels swapped. There are nice-sounding versions on CD as far back as Warner Special Products' Memphis Soul Classics (1987), and Rhino's Soul Shots Vol. 2 (1988).

The second is an absurdly wide mix, starting with ALL the instruments on the right, and Johnnie's opening yelp and the horn blast on the left. It turned up on Rhino's 6-CD R&B Box 30 Years Of Rhythm And Blues (1994). I thought it might be a previously-unreleased mix, until I found it on the Qobuz download of the full Who's Making Love album. I found a vinyl dub on YouTube of a 1973 (non-US) multi-artist compilation LP that includes the wide mix, which convinced me that it was an actual mix released at the time.

my commercial 45 for the johnnie taylor song 'who's making
love' issued as stax 0009 lists a run time on the label as
2:47 but actually runs 2:49.....i point this out because
