The Chicago II cd ends the indexing for Make Me Smile at 3:15 while the Group Portrait cd (both issued by Columbia) ends the indexing at 3:28. Since there was no such thing as a compact disc when Chicago II was released we will never know what the producer James Guercio originally intended to be the ending point of Make Me Smile. You and I would consider the end of Make Me Smile to be 3:15 but the producer of "Group Portrait", Amy Herot, considers it to be 3:28. If I may bring this up once more... I understand the difficulty at determining the official endpoint of the "Make Me Smile" LP version since the song segues into "So Much to Say, So Much to Give", the next part of the medley. In my opinion, I consider the endpoint to be at the 3:28 mark since that's the point where the drums kick back in and "So Much to Say, So Much to Give" begins.

Either way, I have a question for Pat: The LP version of "Make Me Smile" is shown with a run time of 3:15 in the database on all pressings of the Chicago II CD. Is that time based on your own personal decision to determine the LP ending at this point, or is the CD's track indexing done in such a way where the "Make Me Smile" portion of the medley runs 3:15 and then the next portion of the medley begins a new separate CD track? I heard home made edits on the radio going back into the 70's. Stations either did a cross fade of Make Me Smile and Now More Than Ever or made the same edit that Rhino made. You know, now that I think about it, the version I've described is exactly what's on the Rhino Very Best Of CD, running (4:24). While the Rhino disc labeled it a "new edit" in the 2002 release, it almost assuredly dates back to the mid-1970s (I know of a number of Chicago stations that played it, including WLS [used it for quite a while in the 1980s, then the cart gave out and they recarted it with the single version]).

I don't know whether it was an official version serviced to radio.

Was there ever a semi-official version of this serviced to radio? I've never seen one, nor has any station I've worked at played anything but the single version, but I have heard the longer version you describe. First time I heard it was in the mid-ish 70s...heard the same version on several stations around that time (and haven't heard it since). Some of these custom edits have made it to TM-Century Gold Discs, but the only version I've ever seen on one is the 45.

Hmmmm--I always considered the entire medley to end when "Now More Than Ever" (track 12) ends--even if "Colour My World" (track 10) ends up being included.

Most radio stations I know create a custom LP version by tacking on "Now More Than Ever" right at (3:16).

Todd, the length of the entire medley (tracks 6 through 9 on side two of the vinyl LP) is 7:02. The spiral from "Make Me Smile" into track seven occurs about halfway between 3:16 and 3:28.

It really comes down to how you want the song to end. If you dumped out at 3:16, it would sound unnaturally abrupt, and letting it go past 3:28 commits you to the rest of the medley. Every airplay spin I ever heard of the LP version faded it out just before it got to the 3:28 mark.

OR... you could create your own edit simply by tacking the intro from the LP version onto the 45 version. Regarding Chicago's "Make Me Smile", the database states that the LP version is a medley of "MAKE ME SMILE/SO MUCH TO SAY, SO MUCH TO GIVE/ANXIETY'S MOMENT/WEST VIRGINIA FANTANSIES". However, the LP run times on CD are either 3:15 or 3:28.
