The Billboard Hot 100 is still a combination of sales & airplay. In fact, digital downloads have really revitalized the singles market. I still consider any song that makes the Top 40 of the Hot 100 to be a hit.

I think that these 1990s Airplay only songs would've been Top 40 hits, had Billboard policy allowed them to chart at the time. Any database of "hit songs" that includes music from the last 15 +/- years needs to encompass airplay only tracks since a significant number of "hit" songs were never commercially released as singles.
This brings up the question though...what is a "hit" song in the 21st century? A song that gets lots of radio play? Yes I have included a number of current songs that have not appeared on cd but do appear as a digital download. As far as older titles, time permitting I will include those also.
