Thanks to two vinyl dubs from Aaron, I can confirm that there's a length difference between the LP and 45 versions.

The 45 version runs 4:19. The fade ends immediately after the word "dreaming".

For the LP version, the fade starts in the same place as the 45 and decays at the same rate as the 45, but the tail of the fade runs about 10 beats longer to 4:27. I got my LP version from the CD Arista's Perfect 10.

As a practical matter, you won't really notice it. Nope. A quick glance at all 12-inch releases worldwide for the song shows just the album version on all of them. How is it that there was never an extended version, club remix, etc. ever released of this track? Especially with it charting in the clubs, you would think they'd want more than four minutes.

Especially if you're releasing this to radio on a 12", you'd think one side might have the LP version, and the other side an extended version for club play...

I'm not sure MJ burnout had begun by 1984, but given the
frequency of new releases by him, there wasn't a lot of
room in playlists for his older songs too. And this was
before Janet came on the scene adding yet another Jackson
to the mix.

Add to that the fact that many CHRs in the '82-86 time
frame played very few (if any) recurrent and little or no
gold.

The station I was a weekender at in 1984 didn't play the
song at all, as we had transitioned away from Top 40 to AC
earlier that year (a shame since '84 was such a great year
for music, but we were an AM, and management decided to
pursue an older audience). I don't recall hearing it
anywhere else once its airplay run ended.
