Author: Brian W.
Subject: 290
Posted: 14 June 2005 at 3:44pm

Variety's Best-Selling Singles of 1977 (Complete Top
50)

Shocker #1: The #3 sales rank of Elvis' "Way
Down" (only #18 Hot 100)

Shocker #2: The #8 sales rank of Elvis' "My Way"
(only #22 Hot 100)

Shocker #3: The #4 sales rank of Ronnie
McDowell's "The King is Gone," which only hit #13 on the
Hot 100. (Actually, the real surprise is how fast he got
the damn thing out after Elvis died.)

Shocker #4: The Merle Haggard Elvis tribute "From
Graceland to the Promised Land," which peaked at #58 on
the Hot 100, hit #31 in sales.

Coincidentally, Elvis died on the first day of Variety's
chart week for "Way Down/Pledging My Love." The single
had debuted on its own at #42 in issue date 8/24/77
(representing the chart week ending 8/15/77... the day
before Elvis' death), then leapt to its #3 peak the very
next week, remaining in the top ten for five weeks.

Shocker #5: The #27 (minimum) ranking of Rhythm
Heritage's version of "Theme from Rocky" -- which peaked
at #94 on the Hot 100!! (See Rocky notes below.)

Shocker #6: Heart's "Little Queen" single was a
#33 seller (reached only #62 on Hot 100).

Shocker #7: The Kendalls' #1 Billboard country
hit, "Heaven's Just a Sin Away," was a #28 seller
overall, but only #69 on the Hot 100.

Note: No chart published on 5/18/77, but I was
able to determine all positions of missing chart from
"last week" column except #32, #35, and #44. Unlikely
that any of those singles, except possibly #44, made
their only appearance on the chart that week, so they're
listed here somewhere.

"The Variety singles chart is a current reflection of
records active on the national retail level The
tabulation is derived from a broad sampling of sales data
obtained from the top 25 markets. It is based wholly on
retail sales."

Top 40 titles in RED did not
make the Top 40 on the Hot 100.

#1

1. You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone #1 (12
weeks), 10/12/77 (10/3/77)
2. Torn Between Two Lovers - Mary MacGregor #1 (6
weeks), 2/2/77 (1/24/77)
3. When I Need You - Leo Sayer #1 (6 weeks),
4/27/77 (4/18/77)
4. Undercover Angel - Alan O'Day #1 (5 weeks)
7/6/77 (6/27/77)
5. I Just Want to Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb
#1 (5 weeks), 8/10/77 (8/1/77)
6. **Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band – Meco / London
Symphony Orchestra #1 (4 weeks), 9/14/77 (9/5/77) **
(Both versions of the song were listed together,
presumably in rank order, though I don't know that for
sure. The John Williams version was listed on top for
the first six weeks, the final time at #12 (see below),
then they were switched as the song jumped into the top
ten. The Meco version would probably have hit #1
regardless, but no way to tell what the rank of the John
Williams version would have been. I do know that nothing
was prevented from hitting either #1 or the top ten
because of the combined ranking. All #2 hits during the
weeks that "Star Wars" was #1 would eventually peak at #1
themselves, and every #11 song had peaked or would
eventually peak in the top ten. However, if the
John Williams version was top ten during the week of
October 12, it would have pushed Stephen Bishop's "On &
On" down to #11. Seems unlikely though, as that was the
week "Star Wars" dropped from #1.)
7. **Theme From Rocky (Gonna Fly Now) - Bill Conti
/ Maynard Ferguson / Rhythm Heritage #1 (3 weeks),
6/8/77 (5/30/77) **(All versions listed at one position.
Rhythm Heritage was listed as the sole artist for the
first three weeks, peaking on its own at #27 in the
4/13 issue. The Bill Conti and Maynard Ferguson
versions did not even debut in Billboard until the 4/23
issue, so this was no oversight -- the Rhythm Hertiage
version did hit at least #27 in sales. The
remaining artists were added to the listing in Variety in
the 4/20 issue, but Rhythm Heritage remained listed on
top up through its week at #2. When it hit #1, Bill Conti
was listed on top, followed by Maynard Ferguson, with
Rhythm Heritage last. They remained listed in that order
for the rest of the chart run. However, I did not list
the Rhythm Heritage version at #2 here because, after
consulting the other charts of the day, I just don't
think it's plausible the record made it that high. I
chose to list it at #27, with no separate listing for
Maynard Ferguson's, since his name was never at the top
of the list.)
8. Love Theme From "A Star is Born" (Evergreen) -
Barbra Streisand #1 (3 weeks), 3/16/77 (3/7/77)
9. Rich Girl - Hall & Oates #1 (3 weeks), 4/6/77
(3/28/77)
10. Short People - Randy Newman #1 (3 weeks),
1/4/78 (12/26/78)
11. Dreams - Fleetwood Mac #1 (1 week), 6/29/77
(6/20/77)

#2

12. How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees #2 (5
weeks), 12/21/77 (12/12/77)
13. Da Doo Ron Ron - Shaun Cassidy #2 (5 weeks
nc), 7/6/77 (6/27/77)
14. Best of My Love - Emotions #2 (3 weeks),
8/17/77 (8/8/77) (Came within less than 1% of the top
spot on 9/7/77 (8/29/77) -- when it was at #3! It was
neck-and-neck with Star Wars and I Just Wanna Be Your
Everything that week...and Star Wars was only 00.01 point
behind #1!)
15. Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal
Gayle #2 (3 weeks), 11/16/77 (11/7/77)
16. Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth
Band #2 (3 weeks), 2/2//77 (1/24/77)
17. Southern Nights -
