Author: Todd Ireland
Subject: 256
Posted: 26 May 2005 at 10:48pm

I just posted some information regarding the commercial single version of Mo Thugs Family featuring Bone-Thugs-n-Harmony's "Ghetto Cowboy" on the "Single/album version distinctions..." thread. But I've discovered something else about this song that probably warrants some attention.

The 10th edition of T40MOCD correctly lists "Ghetto Cowboy" as appearing on the various artist CD: Boom! Vol. 2 (Beast 54642). But what the book or the CD itself doesn't mention is all of the song's lyrical references to guns are conspicuously edited out on this disc. In what most would probably consider a very clean rap record lyrically to begin with, these censored gun references are especially puzzling given that the loud shotgun sound effect remains intact in the recording!

It turns out this censored version is called the "clean album version", yet can only be found on promo DJ CD copies (Relativity RPROCD0811). Therefore, it can perhaps be best stated that "Ghetto Cowboy" on the Boom! Vol. 2 CD is a "censored radio version".

Edited by Todd Ireland
