Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 2149
Posted: 16 December 2014 at 7:45pm

I'm still surprised to learn that the 45 and LP versions were mixed differently, 40 years after the song came out.

LP mix

My preferred version for the LP mix is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 15 1974 Take Two (1991), where it sounds superb. Excellent dynamic range, great EQ, and not a hint of NR on the fade. It runs 3:32 here. The same analog transfer is used for:

Rhino's Mellow Rock Hits Sundown (1997; absolute polarity inverted, but that doesn't affect sound quality)

Time-Life's Singers And Songwriters Vol. 31 Classics (2001; digitally identical)

The version on Gord's Gold has great dynamic range and a nice EQ as well, but has a tape azimuth alignment error that makes the track sound warbly when summed to mono (listen for the tamborine). The same analog transfer is used for:

TM Century's GoldDisc 211 (also includes noise reduction, adding to the problems here)

45 mix

The version on Razor & Tie's 2-CD Easy '70s (1993) runs about 0.7% too fast, has great dynamic range and nice EQ, but also has a tape azimuth alignment error that makes the track sound warbly when summed to mono.

Much better is Complete Greatest Hits, where it runs at the correct speed, has great dynamic range, nice EQ, and has no sum-to-mono issues. It runs 3:37 here.

Edited by crapfromthepast

The database indicates no different versions at all. Is the "remix" the actual single version or an alternate version? That would seem quite odd, if what Hits Man says is true, that all versions on CD (except the last listing) is not the single or album version, but a remix.
