john, you are definitely correct; the deadwax on this one is a toughy! i got "9837-A-R2-1"... Bell 45 #963, run time 2:39, with the bongos present, but mixed way down, right before the monologue... and just for a bonus: a nice, off-center pressing!

John, if you're commercial copy runs 2:42, then there must be two different pressings of this 45 because Jim's copy runs 2:39.

Just got in a second commercial 45 for this song as the first one sounded like popcorn was a cracklin' in the background.

Just did a nice vinyl dub and the run time appears to be 2:42. It looks like Andy's on to something here. All this time I thought the 45 was an early fade of the LP. However, after doing an A/B comparison between the mono 45 and stereo LP, it turns out bongos are indeed clearly audible on the 45 from 1:38-1:43 right before David Cassidy's saccharine monologue but are not present at the same point on the LP. Therefore, since all database CDs to date feature the song in stereo, it is likely they should all have an "LP version" comment next to them.

Nice catch, Andy! Well, looks like I'm going to have to obtain a mint 45 dub of "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted", unless someone is aware of a mono 45 appearance somewhere on an import CD.

Andy, I listened again to my 45 for you, hunting for bongos, and they are by FAR most prevalent before the monologue. To me, the bongos are NOT very loud, or very present, in the overall mix, and I was only able to detect around :03 of "bongo audio" before that point. It actually sounded more like your stereo LP mix description to me. But determining such details are NOT my specialty - perhaps someone else with a better ear, possessing an original 45, can give you better analysis. Hi Jim,

Could you verify if on your 45 the congas are played all the way through the 'breakdown' in the song (the way I remember).

On the stereo lp mix the congas come back in *after* the 'breakdown' and shortly before David/Keith's wimpy monologue.
