Oh, here's another one. It says 7/22/86. "Sledgehammer" starts at around 50 minutes in (not sure the listed times are accuarte):

Thanks for that 1986 MTV reference. I downloaded and extracted the audio. Other than being a lossy mono transfer, it's a perfect match for what's on the MixMash DVD I mentioned. So that DVD is actually a decent PCM source for the original video mix, although it is EQ'd a little weird; there's a significant dip around 1100 Hz.

Thanks to all who helped get this sorted out! I updated the database (again), but I’m not sure what appears on the later Real World releases. I don’t have those for reference.

The DVD has three audio tracks. Audio track 1 is what should be the original stereo soundtrack of the music videos, presented in Dolby Digital 2.0. Audio tracks 2 and 3 are Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. They feature the same material in each format. It consists of remixes specifically commissioned for this project, mostly reworked by Daniel Lanois. They sound quite different from their original versions. Even if you downmix either of the 5.1 tracks to stereo, you still get the newly remixes he did for this project, just downmixed to two channels. The Daniel Lanois "Sledgehammer" remix for this DVD is easily distinguishable from any other version. Edited by elcoleccionista - 14 hours 56 minutes ago at 9:58pm |

I stand by what I said in my post. The Play stereo track is not the original 1986 video edit, nor is it the edited 2002 mix which has been standing in for the original video mix on streaming. It is a remix exclusive to this DVD. You can easily spot that it's not original by the presence of organ stabs in the dancing chicken scene (3:17, 3:22, 3:27). Also, the vocals are dry and there are a lot of other reverb and level differences which are pretty obvious in headphones, at least to me. I will PM you a link to where you can download all of the versions I have, including the untouched VOBs from the Play and MixMash DVDs, and verify for yourself. |
