Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 3101
Posted: 10 February 2008 at 2:07pm

My commercial 45 (Columbia 38-73889, 1991, printed 4:16, actual 4:18) is an edit of the LP version.

Here are instructions for creating the 45 edit based on my LP version on Hot Hits Pop/Rock Vol. 7 (1991, runs 5:30):

Shorten the opening fade-in on the word "time", so that there is only 0.6 seconds between the first sound and the "t" sound in "time". This is subtle enough so that I didn't do it in my mix; the LP version has about 4.4 seconds between the beginning of the track and the "t" in "time", and I can live with that.
Keep 0:00.0-0:07.3 of the LP version.
Edit on the first backwards-sounding drumbeat.
Remove the 10(?) beats from 0:07.3-0:14.3, so that the first beat is a full 8 beats before the downbeat.
Keep the 218 beats from 0:14.3-2:48.1.
Edit at the beginning of the word "tenderness".
Remove the 16 beats from 2:48.1-2:59.4.
Keep the 108 beats from 2:59.4-4:15.5.
Edit at the beginning of the word "tenderness".
Remove the 16 beats from 4:15.5-4:26.8.
Keep the 14 beats from 4:26.8-4:36.7.
Edit at the beginning of the word "time".
Remove the 16 beats from 4:36.7-4:48.0.
Keep the 20 beats from 4:48.0-5:02.1.
Put a 16-beat fade from 4:50.9-5:02.1. (Note that this fade starts roughly where the LP version fade starts, but it a much quicker fade than the LP, which lasts about 39 seconds.)

Your mixdown will run 4:21.2, with edits at 0:07.3, 2:41.0, 3:57.2 and 4:07.1, with a 16-beat fade from 4:10.0-4:21.2. These timings don't include the shortened fade-in, which can trim about 4 seconds off the intro.
