The Salt In My Tears is definitely on the 80's Pop Culture box set and it is an oversight on my part not to have listed it in the 10th editon. The song is stereo and runs 3:27 on this box set.

Now to answer your other question about mail order cd's, both Time-Life and Collectors' Choice cd's are now available through major distribution wholesalers and that is why they have been included in past editions of Top 40 Music On Compact Disc. Hip-O Select on the other hand has refused to distribute their product through wholesalers and their product will not be included in the next edition for this reason. Not to mention that they have failed to return my phone calls, letters and emails requesting review copies.

I was browsing in the music dept. at my local Borders
bookstore earlier today, when I walked past their section
of CD box sets. Included in the bin was the 2002 7-disc
set titled "Like, Omigod! The '80$ Pop Culture Box
(Totally)", on Rhino 78239. Of course, being the
"80smusicfreak" that I am, I'd checked out this extensive
box set before. :-) However, at about $100, I'd always
felt it was a bit pricey, as that still averages out to
more than $14 per disc! But today I decided to give it
another look, to see if I felt it had enough rarities on
it to justify possibly buying it...

Well, my eyes opened a bit wider when I read what track
#6 on disc 4 was - ironically, it's none other than "The
Salt in My Tears" by Martin Briley! Of course, having
discussed the song here earlier in this thread, I knew it
wasn't listed as being on the Rhino box set in the 10th
edition. So when I got home, I double-checked a few other
tracks from the collection to see if they were in the
10th edition, and they were indeed listed, so I know Pat
must have that box...

Was "The Salt in My Tears" not on original pressings of
Rhino 78239, or did it just somehow slip through the
cracks??? Have any other tracks since been changed (I
know from Pat's book that Rhino has done so w/ other
collections in the past), or were otherwise inadvertently
left out of the listings in the 10th edition??? Also, I'd
be curious to know the timing of the song on the box set
- is it some sort of edit, like on Priority 53681, or do
we get the full (3:27) "LP version"???

Also, more news for fans of Martin Briley and/or "The
Salt in My Tears": According to the March issue of "ice"
magazine (#216), on March 25, the Hip-O Select label
supposedly put out a 2-CD set of his best Mercury tracks
(he released three albums for the label), which no doubt
includes the song as well. I don't yet have that new
release, and curiously, I see there is still no mention
of the Martin Briley collection on the label's official
web site (www.hip-oselect.com), so I don't know if the
March 25 date held, or if it was pushed back...

For the record, the Hip-O Select label is mail-order only
(designed much like Rhino's special "Rhino Handmade"
division), but since Pat now includes mail-order titles
in his book from both Time-Life and Collectors' Choice
Music, I assume future editions will include Rhino
Handmade and Hip-O Select releases as

01) PATRICE RUSHEN (pg. 964) - Her 1982 hit, "Forget Me
Nots", is shown as appearing only in its (4:43) "LP
version" on its 1982 parent album, "Straight from the
Heart", on Rhino 73508. However, like w/ the Tom Tom Club
above, the CD re-issue on Rhino 73508 of the original
Elektra LP/cassette adds both the (4:04) "45 version" and
(7:11) "12" version" of "Forget Me Nots" at the end of
the disc (along w/ some additional bonus tracks). This is
significant, since according to the 10th edition, the 12"
version has yet to appear on any other U.S. CD (although
I do have it on a Canadian import myself)...

02) STEVIE B (pg. 1052) - His 1991 hit, "I'll Be By Your
Side", is misspelled "I'll Be By You Side"...

03) ROD STEWART (pgs. 1054-1058) - His 1979 hit, "Da Ya
Think I'm Sexy?", is misspelled "Do You Think I'm Sexy?"
(although admittedly, I've never understood the "correct"
spelling myself!)...

04) STEPHEN STILLS (pg. 1058) - His 1971 hit, "Sit
Yourself Down", is currently shown as only ever appearing
on the original CD release of "Stephen Stills" on
Atlantic 7202. However, the listings for his previous
1971 hit, "Love the One You're With" (which also appeared
on Atlantic 7202), also indicates the release of a
"remastered edition" of the same album on Atlantic 82809.
While I don't have this remastered edition, I assume it
stands to reason that "Sit Yourself Down" is also

A few more errors/omissions that I recently spotted:

01) FALCO (pg. 374) - The correct title of his 1986 album
on A&M 5105, which contains his top 40 hits "Rock Me
Amadeus" and "Vienna Calling", is "Falco 3" (it was his
third album), not "Falco"...

02) STEVE FORBERT (pg. 398) - The listings for his 1980
hit, "Romeo's Tune", do not include his 1993 compilation
on Nemperor/Epic Associated 53170, "The Best of...: What
Kinda Guy?". I have both the CD and cassette versions
myself...

was true of the original vinyl LP & cassette releases,
current pressings of the CD re-issue include four "bonus
tracks", one of them being the "long version" of "Genius
of Love" (in addition to the original 5:34 LP version). I
have this CD re-issue, and according to the liner notes
in the booklet, this additional mix is actually the
original 12" version. The back insert says it runs
(7:24), but I checked it, and it actually comes in at
(7:26). So I feel this 12" version should be added to the
song's listings. Perhaps these "bonus tracks" weren't on
