The Hits Man reported to me in an email that he has a copy of "I Wish" with a printed time of 3:55 that fades earlier than other copies. My copy has a printed time of 3:37 and actual time of 4:09. Pat's note in the database says his copy states 3:37 and runs 4:10. If others have a 3:55 pressing, can you please report the actual run time?

In the YouTube link provided, and if that's the actual platter playing, I'd venture the idea that it was a UK single by the design of the disc.
Unless, I'm ill-informed which I can easily believe is the case, 45's with the small hole were exclusive to UK pressings.

Garye reported to me in an email that there is a radio edit of "I Wish" that not only is shorter in length but has an edit during the horn instrumental at the end. I have just retrieved two copies of the promo 45 from my collection, and each one has a different Tamla logo. So far, I've only had a chance to play and time one side of one of the records.

The copy I timed, which has catalog number T 54274F, lists a time of 3:37 on both sides. The stereo side runs an actual 4:09 and is identical to the stock 45 I have with a printed 3:37, actual 4:09 run time. The dead wax of this side is T54274F 64265 S G69 [G logo indicating Gloversville] XTAL 1114 FB [DELTA] 101242. I'll time the mono side this evening when I have a chance.

EDIT: The above deadwax info is not correct. I needed a magnifying glass to see it properly and have posted it below.

My other copy has (MR) in the deadwax, which probably means it's a Monarch pressing. There's nothing in the matrix number that would signal it's any different, as it still has the same "main" number of T54274F 64265.

I just timed both sides of my second copy (the MR pressing). Stereo side runs 4:09. Mono side runs 4:08. Unless someone comes forward with yet a third promo pressing that has a different version, I'm beginning to doubt an edited version exists.

I'd also love to know the actual run time of the 3:55 stock pressing if anyone has one.

Please note there is a skip/glitch in the intro of the
"radio edit" that Garye sent.

I don't know if it's a vinyl skip or a digital glitch,
however.

The file in question is an edit someone created using a CD/digital source. It's not from vinyl, which is why I'm still wondering if a radio edit truly exists on a US promo 45. Perhaps a shorter edit was made available overseas, but I don't see any evidence of a US promo having anything different than what we're used to hearing.

I did the radio edit from the flac file of the LP. And
you're right, there is a small glitch in the intro.
Checked the source I used and it's there. But ATM have no
other source available.
I did own the promo 45 for years and my copy ran 3:37 on
both sides, but it was not a Monarch pressing.
But can not remember where it was pressed.

Garye, do you recall what the label looked like? Tamla and Motown would frequently issue different pressings with different fonts for the "logo" at the top, so maybe that would trigger a memory. I have this copy:

https://www.45cat.com/record/nc994517us

And this one:

https://www.discogs.com/release/6995929-Stevie-Wonder-I-Wish

I found a third label variation that I don't have, but it appears to be a Monarch pressing:

https://www.discogs.com/release/11274037-Stevie-Wonder-I-Wis h

None of these 45s state "re-service" or anything that would indicate a different version. I would certainly have expected to see "Short Version" or something if a pressing had different audio. Otherwise, why go to the trouble?

Aaron, my stock 45 runs 4:08. Deadwax isn't the same as your first stereo promo, and although it does have the stamped Monarch logo and delta number, it's a vinyl United pressing.

My promo 45 probably matches your first one: United vinyl pressing with plain, and not stylized "TAMLA" lettering. What you stated as "G69" on your deadwax is "O6G" on mine (there would not have been any MCA Gloversville connection) and the "FB" is actually the mastering engineer's cojoined "AB" initials. What's funny on this particular side is that the "M" in the "MR" Monarch logo, didn't make an impression, so somebody crudely etched it in by hand. :)

Thanks, John! I just got out my magnifying glass and a strong light. Here's the actual deadwax from my copy:

T54274F 64265 S O6G [MR] XTAL #14 AB [DELTA] 101242

So, it's the same copy you have.

My second copy has the stylized Tamla logo:

T-54274-A Stereo SP #08 T54274F 64265 O6H [MR] XTAL AB [DELTA] 101242

Then, should this edit be classified as a UK 45 version?

I checked at Discogs and this is pic is the one closest
to my promo as I remember.

Wish
it was a vinyl while it seems the Monarch pressing looks
to be polystryrene.

That's one of the copies I have, and it's pressed on vinyl (not polystyrene).
