Aaron mentioned in the ZOOM call that he would like to see us talk about the projects we are working on. I am reasonably sure that 60-70%
of the board are interested primarily in obtaining or constructing single versions of Top 40 Hits. If I were a little more capable of
editing, I might give it a go. I am in a peculiar situation of having a LOT of vinyl. What do you do with all that vinyl? Go to the nearest
record store where they might offer you .10 cents a piece? Go online and try to sell some of it at a buck or two? No. For the last 26 years I
have managed to put my collection onto CD. Almost all are still not available on CD, commercially. For instance, I just finished a CD with
the L.P. and a few singles of 'Dana Valery', who had 2 Hot 100 hits. I am now on the L.P. and singles of 'Valjean'! He also had a couple of
minor hits. Do you think that any CD replicating company would ever do the same? No way. I don't stay just with Pop music. I think the most
neglected music on CD is probably Country. I just finished a Mel Tillis CD. The most complete Mel Tillis CD is,"36 All-Time Greatest Hits" on
Timeless Music? It still only scratched the surface of his complete hit output. I had L.P.s of his Elektra hits and more. Who else would do
this? 'Bear Family'? I don't think so. If you multiply the above by the 1600 CD's I've already done, I plead musical insanity. I am not a big
Country fan. I do it because I don't think there are many of us who digitize music to this degree. What if the masters are no longer
available? The 2008 fire at Universal is an indication of 'Nothing is forever'. Am I the only crazy one here? -Bill.

No, you're far from crazy. I was looking at Johnny Lee's
catalog and many of the #1 songs he recorded for Warner
in the mid 80's are nowhere to be found on cd. It's a
shame to see his catalogs neglected. It is available for
download though.
John Schneider's albums have been out of print now for
three decades. He was an actor and a household name.

I don't think you are crazy for doing what you like. I have a lot of vinyl I'd like to digitize as well, but despite buying a nice turntable and some extra cartridges, I haven't yet begun.
There's actually a lot of things I'd like to get started on, but I need to figure out the plan of focus and stick with it. (My resolution plan for the last 50+ years.)
I do admit, I get into a Country rut every now and then. It kind-of makes the whole of the picture for me. Even if the part is rather small.

If you're crazy, then so am I. I've put a lot of vinyl
records onto compact disc. I use a very nice turntable
with a good pre-amplifier and my results are worth the
effort. I've done hundreds of vintage singles and albums
and when I listen to them, it's so nice.

If you love what you do, who cares what anybody else thinks? My Dad thought I was wasting my time
listening to AT40 every single week and keeping chart stats, yet it eventually led to my dream job at
Record Research. Sure, I could be making a lot more money had I chosen a different career path, but I
highly doubt I'd be as happy and fulfilled. BTW, I really want to discuss stuff like this on the next Zoom
meeting. Hope you can make it, Bill!
I too am shocked at the lack of Country chart hit history available on CD. There are tons of artists that
need better digital representation.

Yeah, my father used to crab at me a lot for "wasting"
my money on records too. I had moved away from home
well before AT40 came to be.

I too have a lot of vinyl, primarily 45s but a lot of
LPs too and have wondered the same thing. I'm in my
early 70s, and looking to downsize a bit. I too have
lots of records I hardly ever listen to, but every
time I think about thinning out the collection
there'll be a thread here about some unique version
that's only on the 45.
As far as what to do with the collection, I face the
same dilemma...take 10¢ (if that) on the dollar from a
dealer? Try to sell them onesy-twosey on Discogs? I
dunno. Don't think I have anything that's necessarily
"collectable" anyway...just a lot of old songs, a lot
of which are promo copies in varying condition.
My wife thinks I should donate it to "some museum",
but I can't imagine who'd want it. Hopefully I have
enough years left where 'most anyone who'd be
interested in my music is likely gone too.

Many years ago, I got rid of my physical collection(s). First to go was the vinyl. I held a huge sale at the radio station
where I was working at the time (1991). I sold 45s for a quarter and albums for a buck. Probably got rid of 75% of my
collection that way. The rest (the more collectible stuff) went to a local dealer and he gave me a fair price we were both
happy with.
I slowly sold off my CD collection over a seven year period (from about 2002-2008), most to Half Price Books. They probably
averaged around $1-$2 per CD, but that was when the market was still pretty strong. Can't imagine you'd get even that much
for them now.
I've always been more about the song than the format and am perfectly happy to store them on my hard-drive (although I also
have everything burned to disc as a backup and to play in my car).

Most recently took about a year and a half to cover art the entire top 40 free from any vinyl sounding dubs and organize it as complete as it is most likely ever going to be.
I agree with Paul, the physical can be overrated. Having a digital collection is a lot more mentally satisfying. As much as many of us want to hang on to the CD, it is a few years from totally fading away. Most artists don't even want to release a CD they opt to do so digitally now and offer streaming to the masses.
I was never into vinyl at all. As far as "music insanity" most everyone on this board is pretty much there already, welcome to the club! If i could learn how to properly dub vinyl I would consider doing 12 inches of stuff that is not on CD. That would probably be the only reason to go back to vinyl. Otherwise while youcantdownloadvinyl, you can downloadacdrip.

I have a never ending project.
I have thousands of 45's. Even though I can play them I never do.I collect
them for the picture sleeves.
I number of years ago I was buying 45's in Lots just to get a few sleeves I
wanted. Some were mixed lots, with pic sleeves and some without. I love
edits and it's crazy to see how many of the 45's I have that there is no
digital version of a particular song with that edit or remix. I have bought
many hundreds of just picture sleeve only. Mostly those came from Juke
Box companies and are by far in better shape than most others.
So for over 10 years I have been scanning the picture sleeves, along with
CD Singles and 12" singles, and cleaning them up in Photoshop. I took a a
lot of time off from my project few times or only did maybe 50 or so I year a
few times, but I keep at it. I started going crazy again on the scanning so I
have done about 80 in the last month or so.
I think my family thinks I am crazy and I know there are better things to do
with my time but it makes me happy to see a picture sleeve or whatever
look decent after I clean it up in Photoshop. It's always going to look like a
old printed piece of paper and not straight from digital but I like that part of
it. Very, very few people even care I think but that's OK. One day maybe
more people will appreciate the singles artwork again.

Thanks to all who think mine is not a worthless venture! I can now show my wife, "See, I'm not crazy after all". I am
still under the illusion that I may be the only one that 1) Has a huge amount of vinyl, mostly left over from my
record store, 2) Is knowledgeable with the software to clean it up, 3) Can research which projects need to be done &
4) Sees the need to do a project of this magnitude. For instance, UCLA started a project 30 years ago to digitize and
restore old movies before they fade away. Is there any University or think tank that is concerned with Popular,
R&B/Soul, Country, Jazz, or whatever music we have to preserve? Oh well, I am still so grateful for this forum and the
incredible amount of musical intelligence that it attracts -Bill.

I'm so grateful for this community too! This might be a
bit of an esoteric hobby, but as I always told my mom,
it's better than drinking or drugs! ;-). If it weren't for
the internet, few of us might have met to discuss all this
minutiae that we find so interesting.
I had a fairly large (by my standards, anyway) vinyl
collection that I finally parted with around 2012. I sold
it pretty cheaply to a guy who seemed so excited to have
it, so that made me happy to see. I kept about 200 of my
favorite 45s and a few LPs. I'm holding on to my CD
collection, though. They all fit along one wall in my
spare room and seeing them just makes me happy.
Paul, I do think you ended up with the perfect job for
most of us here in this group! :)

I forgot to mention that I do have my ongoing project online. Not sure if
it’s against any rules to list it here though. It’s just a simple website. I
need to rebuild it with a search function and a different menu structure
but Adobe Portfolio is a very basic site building service. I can’t wrap my
head around Wordpress so Portfolio it is for now. Other site builders
don’t offer the search function I need.

This is a very interesting thread. As we're this detailed with finding/having various versions of songs, I think we're all music freaks (and not just 80sMusicFreak)!
I've kept all my CDs and will continue to do so. Similar to Frank, most of my CD collection can fit on 2 walls on CD shelves in a room (Plus, a tower cabinet full of CDs). But I have run out of space and new purchases are stored a bit randomly in the room. Unlike some folks, I love having CDs, especially the artwork, liner notes, songwriter/producer credits - and growing up on vinyl, I really like having a physical product. That said, since I like the sound of CDs better than scratchy/clicky/worn-out/crackly vinyl, I do often get rid of vinyl once I've replaced it on CD. (Sometimes this is a mistake, I've learned later, when I got rid of a special mix that wasn't on the CD.)
And going back to the first post in this thread, as I came to really fill in much of my '70s/'80s CD collection, I was surprised at how many country artists that don't have all their albums on CD, especially country superstars like Tanya Tucker, Barbara Mandrell, T.G. Sheppard (who had 14 #1 hits!), etc. Even country hits that peaked at #12 like T.G. Sheppard's "Without You" has never been on any CD of his or a VA comp. In that case, he had 10 singles in a row, 9 of which peaked at #1, and this one (the 11th) peaked at #12. So maybe it was considered a "flop". Still, I'm very surprised of all the country hits not on CD.

My above post brings up another topic. What genres are the most represented and the least represented on CD? I'd say disco is probably the most represented on CD (especially with labels like funkytowngrooves and some of the Cherry Pop Records and its subsidiary labels - like soulmusic). They've also helped contribute a lot to soul albums being on CD. I'm glad this genre is so well represented on CD. But ...
Least represented: Country
Pop is in the middle somewhere.
Just my opinion.

PS - I meant to say this earlier in response to these posts. For those of you who this applies to: When you were buying CDs in the '80s, and if an older you told you, "You'll throw all these CDs away some day!", would you ever have believed him/you? :)

What is demand and what labels can get the rights to
is the stuff that has been issued on cd. Soul/disco
was slow to get reissued but once the mid 90's came
around, it exploded!
About 90% of the titles I've searched for have been
put on cd in the soul/disco genre. The stuff that I'm
missing is mostly indie stuff. The best known soul
artist under representing on cd is probably Jerry
Bulter. I have 25K titles, hits, and comps in this
category.
I must say I have nothing in the wants list for hard
bop jazz and I'm about 6,000 titles deep. Later
spriritual/free jazz has been tough to get in all
formats. Rights, small labels, and obscurity all play
in to that.
The 50's hardbop doesn't require royalty
payment if issued in the EU. As long as you stay away
from the 20 albums on 8 cd labels, you are okay. Fresh
Sounds from Spain does a nice job of reissuing this
era as well as Mosaic in the US.

I don't know if I'd consider myself a "collector" per
se, more just a guy with a lot of records/CDs. Other
than an interest in promo copies, and liking to have
what were the hits, I don't really have any special
interest. I've been at the right place at the right
time on several occasions, and have ended up with
several radio station libraries (both vinyl & CD) that
were destined for the dumpster.
As far as projects go, this winter's project has been
to update the database I keep of compilation/VA LPs
and CDs. It was more than just a bit haphazard as to
what got entered, especially songs that appeared on
multiple collections...some got entered some didn't.
Plus I've been a bit lax at entering stuff in the past
few years, so it's about time to get caught up.

Never really gave that much thought, though it would
seem that rock (especially what's now considered
classic rock) is one of the better-represented genres.
