For anyone here who was working in radio in 1991 when this song was on the charts, did this song get any airplay? I imagine it would have been considered too hard even
for Top 40 radio, but I suppose some stations may have played it at only certain times of the day. Also, if it did have some airplay, was it the Album/Single Version
that was played or the Radio Edit running about 4 Minutes from the Promo CD Single? I know the song got up to #16 on the Hot 100 and I'm sure the majority of its chart
points came from Sales. I can honestly say the only time I heard it on the radio was on "American Top 40" with Shadoe Stevens.

I wasn't working in top 40 at that time, but the song did actually peak at #36 on the R&R CHR chart. You're probably right about sales being a big reason behind its much higher Hot 100 peak, but didn't Billboard's formula also include airplay from other formats, like Mainstream Rock and video airplay on MTV?

I know Shadoe Stevens played it during its chart run, however, it was severely edited and I think it ran around 2 minutes.

I still do not know what the official edit of this sounds like. I found a
few on YouTube and this one seems the most legit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgWdl1XOFJg

Can anyone confirm if this is the "official" edit found on the promo
CD (https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/589409?ev=rb)?

I don't remember for sure if they played this song on my local top
40 station back in 1991 but I do believe they did. If they did it was
surely the LP version since I have never heard an official edit of it in
my life. I do know that same station never played Nirvana's "Smells
Like Teen Spirit" edit back then, only the LP version.

That’s the official edit. The intro is unique; it’s a new mix from the
multitrack rather than a straight edit. Beyond the intro, nothing else
stands out to me as being different with the mix, but I’ve never done a
close A/B.

At the time "Enter Sandman" peaked at #16, it was still
just a combination of (mostly) CHR airplay and sales. In
fact, the song peaked at #3 on the sales chart and didn't
even crack the airplay chart in Billboard. MTV play was
never a direct factor in the Hot 100 (though it obviously
influenced what many radio stations played).

The bulk of my memory of this song did come from MTV. I was not
a big Metallica fan nor were my friends until this song went into
heavy rotation on MTV. Aaron are you saying just the intro is a new
mix or the entire song?

The intro is for sure. The rest doesn't sound like a different mix, but
again, I haven’t done a close A/B.

I tried to A/B this track and the edit sounds like a hotter mix to
me but I'm far from an expert. Plus I'm using a YouTube source
since the promo CD is so expensive. I do like how the intro is
exclusive to this edit but man it tears the buildup down so much.
That song is all about the buildup to the first verse. They also
cut 4 bars out after the first chorus. In addition they fade the
song out early and I love the long fade on the album version. If I
were to edit this track I would probably try not to mess with it too
much. Tomorrow I'm going to make an attempt at the following
for the intro:
leave first 4 bars
cut second 4
leave 8
trim next 12 down to 4
trim next 8 down to 4
and not touch the rest.

I just A/B'd the Edit with the album version. After the intro, the mix is identical between the two. No hotter mix--just editing.

my ears are not as talented as yours.

I always wondered about this: 5 singles were released
from this album and they all sold reasonably well. I
always pictured Metallica fans as album buyers vs
singles buyers. Who exactly was buying these singles,
considering airplay was next to nothing?

Just curious if anyone has any insight.

I am sure many fans were picking up the singles for the exclusive
live tracks that were included. I believe only imports (non U.S.)
versions were released. I have never heard one edited version
from any of the promos on the air. I do own the promo's for
"Nothing Else Matters" and "The Unforgiven" and the edits
sound jarring. I cringe every time I hear the edit points. Same
goes for the official edit of "Enter Sandman" that I just
discovered. It may be only because I am so accustomed to the
full length album versions. Normally when I hear an edited
version of any song it does not bother me. In fact I tend to favor
them.

At the release of this album I was in high school. I do remember
there was a bunch of hype associated with this release. All of
my metalhead friends were already into them from the old days
and all of a sudden all of us preppy kids were getting into heavy
metal even though were were not into the genre in the late 80s.
This album almost crossed over to a non-metal rock sound and
when "The Unforgiven" was release all the girls fell in love with
James Hetfield's voice. This following continued into the release
of Load in 1996. The big thing then was "OMG they cut their
hair!"

Sorry, I may not be the right person to ask or it has
already been discussed elsewhere, but it should be added
to the database that version 45 can be found in the Box
Set, released in 2021.
Also included are edited versions and other rare versions
of "The Unforgiven" (Radio Edit), "Nothing Else Matters"
(Radio Edit), and "Wherever I May Roam" (Radio Edit) that
did not make the top 40 at the time.

Thanks for the tip on locating those radio edits. The Box
Set is also available for purchase on Qobuz.
