I was listening to another box set I've had for years now, "Citizen Steely Dan." One of the rare times I do that with headphones on. (Just got a new set and was trying them out.)

On "Brooklyn (Owes the charmer under me)", I seem to have found something odd. The song, which apparently did not crack the top 100 was played a lot on the radio in Saint Louis.
One of the few songs not sung by Donald Fagen, but by David Palmer. I had always been told and read that Fagen and Becker were insane perfectionists during sessions and didn't like
the idea of, "Good Enough."

So, here I am trying to see if these headphones are lying to me or if there is a minor fault by one of the background singers with the hook-line. Getting towards the end of the
song at 3:39 - 3:40 one of them appears to start singing but stops abruptly as a soft guitar solo begins and finishes the song. I had to stop and replay this a few times but it still
sounds to me just like that. If this was any other band, I wouldn't even consider posting this. Steely Dan though? I'm amazed!

I looked around a bit and found someone else had posted this on a reddit chat with some fairly broken english. I haven't seen a mention of it in any other place.

On their earlier albums, they took more of a
"marketable rock band" approach (hence not having Fagen
singing lead on a few songs and not having Fagen
singing lead AT ALL during TV and concert appearances)
and they were a little more lax about mistakes as long
as it grooved. Also, at that time Becker and Fagen
didn't have the budget or clout to go back in and fix
little things like that if they felt it necessary.
Though it's also HIGHLY possible they left that mistake
in just to embarrass the hell out of whomever messed
up.

Only after having substantial chart
success did Fagen and Becker gain more confidence in
their own ability and retooled Steely Dan into more of
a "studio project" where the idea of a solid band
lineup went out the window and absolute "in-the-pocket"
perfection was made paramount.

I've also been told that the "Citizen" collection was produced with the Q-Sound process. I really should bone-up on what that really means. I was also told that Madonna's Immaculate
Collection was also done in this way. OK, I'm good with those. Lately, I've been noticing another Steely Dan collection selling in the UK called "The Very Best Of Steely Dan."
I'm wondering if anyone has this set and can comment about the recording processing used? If the tracks are the same as the "Citizen" collection, then I'm not going to bother.

Dave, 'Citizen Steely Dan' was not remixed
utilzing Q-Sound.

But I heard rumors that some cuts may have
been mastered using CEDAR noise reduction.

Perhaps this is what you meant to say?

Let me know if I'm right or wrong.

Most likely, you are right. Hah!

I was just looking high and low for the post that I was sure someone had made the comment. However, I can't find it. Perhaps it doesn't exist.
I was fairly certain that I read in a post that someone said that both Immaculate Collection and Citizen were recorded using the same process.

If I happen to run across it again I will post a quote or a link to it.

Thanks Andy!

Edit:

And, so you are right! I haven't had any issue with CEDAR on the Steely Dan set myself. I will have to do some research on this and Q-Sound.
