For the search engine, the song in question is "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep At All" by the Fifth (5th) Dimension, from 1972.

I believe that the first time the song appeared on CD was on Arista's CD release of the 5th Dimension collection Greatest Hits On Earth (copyright 1972). Discogs shows the CD as being released in 1985 and also in 1990, so we'll just round off and say that this CD is "old". It doesn't sound great here, likely due to a relatively high-generation tape source. The same analog transfer is used on:
  • RCA Special Products' Tender Moments (1991) - differently-EQ'd digital clone, but also shortens the fade
  • DCC Compact Classics' Groove On Vol. 2 (1996)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 11 After Dark (1997) - differently-EQ'd digital clone
  • EMI Australia's 5-CD Pop Complete (1999)
Time-Life's Superhits Vol. 11 1972 (1991) uses the same analog transfer as Greatest Hits On Earth, but swaps the left and right channels. Superhits was later repackaged as AM Gold Vol. 7 1972 (1991), with the same mastering. Razor & Tie/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Easy '70s (1993) is based on the mastering of Superhits and also has its left and right channels swapped.

Sessions/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Everlasting Love (1989) uses a different analog transfer than all of the above, and seems to use lower-generation source tapes than all of the above. I prefer the sound on this CD over all of the above.

Everlasting Love sounds closest to my original Bell LP of
"Greatest Hits On Earth" and the channels on both are
coherent.
