the first tune I heard was a re-recording of
Patches by Dickey Lee. Not exactly promising....

True, but the page says "50s and Early 60s Rock N Roll
Hits." I wonder why they feel the need to include early
60s tunes for that's when the 50s sound really started to
change?

They do the same thing on SiriusXM's "50s on 5". I think it's because rock-n-roll "officially" began when "Rock Around The Clock" hit #1 in 1955. Therefore, in order for it to be a "decade" channel, it needs to include ten years. And that stretches it till about 1964. Which I can see to some extent, as that's when the Beatles invaded and rock really changed.
