complete-holland-dozier-holland-singles-collected-on-new-box -set/

Quote:
The legacy of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland is
filled with some of the most popular songs ever written: “Stop! In the
Name of Love,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” “Baby, I Need Your
Loving,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” among them.
All of those songs, and so many other indelible hit records, were written
under the aegis of Hitsville, USA, a.k.a. Berry Gordy’s Motown empire. But
by 1967, the relationship between the label chief and his star writers was
starting to feel strained. Within two years, the H-D-H team had struck
out on their own, forming Invictus Records, distributed by Capitol, and
Hot Wax Records, distributed by Buddah. H-D-H’s new wrinkle on the
Sound of Young America eventually encompassed the Music Merchant
label as well, and gave Motown a run for its money with hits from The
Chairmen of the Board, Freda Payne and The Honey Cone. Now, Demon
Music Group’s Harmless Records is putting together the most
comprehensive survey of the Invictus-Hot Wax-Music Merchant catalogue
yet with Holland-Dozier-Holland: The Complete 45s Collection:
Invictus/Hot Wax/Music Merchant 1969-1977.

By the numbers, this 14-CD box set, due on May 26 in the U.K. and the
following week in the U.S., celebrates the 45th anniversary of H-D-H’s
independence with a staggering array of newly remastered 45 RPM
singles:

96 x Invictus 45s
44 x Hot Wax 45s
17 x Music Merchant 45s
for a total of 157 singles and 269 original recordings.

This could fill in so many top 40 on CD collections but unfortunately it's
not clear weather the U.S. mono mixes will be used since it is an English
production.

Here's hoping.

This looks interesting but pricey.

According to the producer, they're using the U.S. mixes, and mono where the singles were mono. Someone later asked him how they sourced the mono songs, and he didn't respond, so they my be disc dubs, I don't know.

So maybe early reviews will clue us in to the sound quality. If they are using master tapes then my guess is the trio of Holland Dozier Holland would have to be involved somehow (unless they sold those prior....I'm not familiar with the history of the label in the last few decades).

Forget about the sound for a moment. If you want the
correct US 45 versions then I can tell you at least three
are not.

1. You've Got To Crawl (Before You Walk) - The 8th Day:
The LP version has an intro of ten seconds versus the
single version that had a six second intro before the
vocal starts. The version included is the ten second
intro.

2. The Day I Found Myself - Honey Cone: The version used
has no spoken word intro. Both the 45 and LP versions
had a spoken word intro.

3. I'm Not My Brothers Keeper - Flaming Ember: The longer
LP version that has been out on CD before (running over
four minutes in length) is the one used on this set.

I'm still listening to the 14 discs so there may be
others. I will add that there are several low charting
Hot 100 hits that are on this set that I've never heard
prior (and I've discovered some songs that are pretty
good).

I downloaded "Give Me Just a Little More Time," and it is narrow stereo, NOT mono... but definitely stereo. Also not very good sound on that track.

I can also confirm that many of the songs are not the 45
single versions.

If you're looking for the mono singles, forget it!

Many thanks to everyone here who investigated the contents of this new Holland-Dozier-Holland box set and reported back with your very helpful findings... From the looks of things, you're going to be saving many of us a lot of money and disappointment as a result of not buying this set!

I was ready to buy.

By chance is Laura Lee's Women's Love Rights or Freda Payne's Bring The
Boys Back Home correct and in mono?

Women's Love Rights is stereo, listed (3:13), actual (3:11), and is the same
LP version found on all current db CDs.

Bring The Boys Home is stereo, listed (3:09), actual (3:07). The listed time
on the 1971 45 was (3:08). What the H-D-H box did is to simply fade out
the LP version early, as if them doing so would then magically make what
appears on this new set the correct 45 version.....

FYI, I just gave the entire set a quick listen, and only 3 current
database songs on it appear in mono:

-Freda Payne--Deeper & Deeper
-8th Day--She's Not Just Another Woman
-100 Proof Aged In Soul--Somebody's Been Sleeping

Overall, there are a decent number of songs that do appear in mono, but
the overwhelming majority were 45-only releases, made by either obscure
or non-Top-40-hit acts, and were recorded in 1972 or earlier.

Don't know about any of you but I plan on unloading my box as soon as possible via amazon or ebay. Maybe I can break even.

What could have been...too bad.

Thanks, guys, for saving me a good chunk of money. I appreciate all your reviews. I was really hoping they would use the mono single versions here. Drat.

On another forum on which the producer announced the set,
no one has heard from him since he announced it and
claimed that the U.S. single versions were on it.
