i see that the 45 by the rolling stomes issued as london 9741 came in two different label designs....one is the light blue, dark blue kaleidoscope design.....and one is the sunshine, bridge over a brook one.....question is...which one was originally release in 1965 when it was on the charts?

The original was the dark blue kaleidoscope, Ed. In fact, every London 45
I've ever seen with the "sunshine, etc." label is a re-isuue. But I've also
seen some London copies, using the original blue label design, that are, in
fact, hard-to-determine re-issues. You *really* have to get into the
"menusha" here, my friend. Big hassles for you ahead! The original blue
London 45s often showed hyphens on the catalog # on the label, where
the re-issues didn't. Ed, you are starting to get into the very same, painful
issues I have already gotten through, over the past 20 years. There are a
few labels where it can be especially difficult to determine if it was an
original release or not. Some companies kept old hit 45s "in print" for
years as re-issues, using the original label design and catalog #'s.
Like London, Specialty, Chess, Laurie, and Double Shot, for example. My
advice? For your own good, avoid them! I've already done 99% of the work
you are about to take on here. When you get a "batch" of songs on these
labels, feel free to e-mail me with them. I know/knew what to look for, I
already have the correct originals, and I will happy to work with you on
them.

Some later pressings of some Rolling Stones 45s are not the original single versions. I have 45s of both "Tell Me" and "Time Is On My Side" on the 'sunrise' label (pressed in the late 70s, perhaps early 80s) that are actually the LP versions. My 'sunrise' 45 of "She's A Rainbow" is the much shorter dj 45 version.
What I've always found curious about the later pressings of Rolling Stones 45s is that after Abkco obtained ownership of the Rolling Stones London recordings, the 45s continued to be issued on the London label although, as I understand it, retailers had to purchase them from Abkco. The Rolling Stones London 45s went out of print around 1986 and were never reissued again. Around the same time, the band moved from Atlantic to Columbia and their 1971-1983 Atlantic singles went out of print as well.

When you say the album version of "Tell Me", I presume
you mean the one that appeared on the ABKCO reissue
albums that had the instrumental bridge before the final
chorus? Was that version on an album prior to that?
I'll have to double-check, but that song on my original
London "High Tides & Green Grass" is the same as the 45,
while the ABKCO version has the long version.

Does anyone know if "sunrise" reissues of "Jumpin' Jack
Flash" are also the radio edit?
As far as "She's A Rainbow" goes, it was several years
before I even knew there was a long version of that, let
alone that stock singles were long. My copy was a promo,
as was what we played on the air, and for whatever reason
it wasn't a song that ever made it to "gold" rotation
anywhere I worked. To this day, the longer version
doesn't sound "right" to me.

The LP version of "Tell Me" first appeared on the vinyl LP "England's Newest Hitmakers" and yes the LP version does include an instruemntal bridge not found on the 45. Oddly enough the vinyl LP "Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass)" included the 45 version even though the record label stated a running time of (3:47), the LP version. When this "Big Hits" LP was released on cd, ABKCO elected to use the LP version.

The version of "Tell Me" on my 'sunrise' 45 is the (3:46) version. The version of "Time Is On My Side" on my 'sunrise' 45 is not the LP version as I stated above (the LP and original 45 versions are the same as far as I can tell), but the version that has both guitar and organ on the intro.
