If you're a collector of 60s hits in mono, you'll want to check out the new series on Ace Records called "The London American Label Year By Year". I just picked up the initial volume in the series, "1960", and it has some hard-to-find mono versions of hits from that year, such as "Poetry In Motion" and "You're Sixteen".

Deviating from Ace's usual approach, the liner notes indicate that there was a deliberate decision to present all the songs in mono for authenticity, and that most of them come from tape sources. Also, the notes indicate that there will be CDs for 1961, 1962 and 1963. Sound quality is quite good. Here is the track listing:

1. LET IT ROCK Chuck Berry
2. THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN - Eddie Cochran
3. WISHFUL THINKING - Wynn Stewart
4. KOMMOTION - Duane Eddy
5. BLUE ANGEL - Roy Orbison
6. MYSTERY TRAIN - Vernon Taylor
7. TINY TIM - LaVern Baker
8. POETRY IN MOTION - Johnny Tillotson
9. I LOVE THE WAY YOU LOVE - Marv Johnson
10. ROAD RUNNER - Bo Diddley
11. BEATNIK FLY - Johnny and the Hurricanes
12. ALL I COULD DO WAS CRY - Etta James
13. TOO YOUNG TO DATE - The Delicates
14. DON'T BE CRUEL - Bill Black's Combo
15. WAKE ME, SHAKE ME - The Coasters
16. JUDY - Teddy Redell
17. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME - The Drifters
18. HEY LITTLE ONE - Dorsey Burnette
19. LOVEY - The Clovers
20. SOMEBODY TO LOVE - Bobby Darin
21. I'VE BEEN LOVED BEFORE - Shirley & Lee
22. DOLL HOUSE - Donnie Brooks
23. PERFIDIA - The Ventures
24. LIKE STRANGERS - The Everly Brothers
25. MY GIRL JOSEPHINE - Fats Domino
26. THE GIRL ON DEATH ROW - Lee Hazlewood with Duane Eddy and his orchestra
27. SADIE'S BACK IN TOWN - Sonny Burgess
28. YOU'RE SIXTEEN - Johnny Burnette

This series won't appear in the database since it is an import. Here's hoping that Ace keeps up the good work on this series.

I have received this CD, and I'm thrilled that this new series of (Ace U.K.) mono 45 versions has been both started and appears will continue for a while. So far, I have confirmed that it finally features the correct-speed 45 versions for both Donnie Brooks' "Doll House", and Bill Black's "Don't Be Cruel" - neither of which have ever appeared correctly on CD before, to my knowledge.

Just picked up the new 1961 volume of this series today, and was thrilled to see it contains the CD debut of the mono single mix of Pat Boone's final #1 hit, "Moody River." Sounds great, too! It also has Roy Orbison's "Crying" in mono, another first on CD, to my knowledge. And the usual beautiful, detailed ace CD booklet, filled with photographs and info.

All tracks are mono:

1. What'd I Say - Lewis, Jerry Lee
2. Spanish Harlem - King, Ben E.
3. Riders In The Sky - Ramrods
4. Lovey Dovey - Knox, Buddy
5. Just Out Of Reach (Of My Two Open Arms) - Burke, Solomon
6. Wait A Minute - Coasters
7. Magnificent Seven, The - Caiola, Al
8. More Than I Can Say - Vee, Bobby
9. You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby - Darin, Bobby
10. So Long Baby - Shannon, Del
11. Hurt - Yuro, Timi
12. Ring Of Fire - Eddy, Duane
13. Moody River - Boone, Pat
14. Weekend - Cochran, Eddie
15. Naomi - Toussaint, Allen
16. Spanish Twist - Haley, Bill & The Comets
17. Ram Bunk Shush - Ventures
18. Girls - Burnette, Johnny
19. Ain't Gonna Wash For A Week - Hodges, Eddie
20. Crying - Orbison, Roy
21. Twist Her - Black, Bill Combo
22. Sweets For My Sweet - Drifters (1)
23. Lonesome Road - Johnson, Miriam
24. Peppermint Twist, The - Peppermint, Danny & The Jumping Jacks
25. Get With It - Nelson, Sandy
26. Boo Hoo - Rainwater, Marvin
27. What A Party - Domino, Fats
28. Morning After - Mar-Keys

Thanks, Brian - just ordered it from Amazon. There is now just one left in stock. This makes me happy, because it seems that these recent, mono version and/or Collectors' Choice-type, money-making singles comps (their top new release sellers of late, says Gordon Anderson) are really selling well. Here's hoping that both CC & Ace (U.K.) keep up their great work, that other labels (hint: Rhino, re-hire your employees!) will take note of the favorable sales figures of others, and will hop on board with some similar packages of their own. Yes, the youngsters love their downloads, but tons of us over-40-types still love buying/having our music on CDs!

Play.com has posted the track listing for the upcoming 1962 volume of Ace's "London American Label" series, which will be released on June 28th. If they stick to the all-mono configuration they've been doing with this series, we're about to get the first-time-on-CD mono mix for Pat Boone's "Speedy Gonzalez," plus a hopefully correct single-length mono mix of "Monster Mash."

   1. (Ain't That) Just Like Me - The Coasters
   2. The Loco-Motion - Little Eva
   3. A Certain Girl - Ernie K-Doe
   4. I've Been Twistin' - Jerry Lee Lewis
   5. He's Old Enough To Know Better - The Crickets
   6. The Crowd - Roy Orbison
   7. The Swiss Maid - Del Shannon
   8. Big Big Love - Carol Connors
   9. Stranger On The Shore - The Drifters
10. Free Me - Robert Knight
11. Monster Mash - Bobby "Boris" Picket & The Crypt Kickers
12. Pretty Susy Sunshine - Larry Finnegan
13. Here It Comes Again - The Chantels
14. What'd I Say Parts 1 & 2 - Bobby Darin
15. Ecstasy - Ben E King
16. But Not For Me - Ketty Lester
17. Just A Little Bit Sweet - Charlie Rich
18. Drums Are My Beat - Sandy Nelson
19. I'll Wait Forever - Anita Wood
20. Jambalaya - Fats Domino
21. Blues Stay Away From Me - Ace Cannon
22. She's A Troublemaker - The Majors
23. Lucy Lee - Lloyd George
24. Pretty Baby - Charlie Grace
25. Shutters And Boards - Jerry Wallace
26. Speedy Gonzales - Pat Boone
27. Lover Please - Dennis Turner
28. It Might As Well Rain Until September - Carole King

Thanks for the update, Brian. I've been pleased with the quality of the first two releases in this Ace series and am looking forward to future installments.

I'm so mad at myself, Paul -- I think I actually threw the 1960 volume away. My PC drive was having problems, so I replaced it myself. Well, I can't find the 1961 disc anywhere. It's not in the case. I will bet you money it was in that disc drive when I took it out. If so, it's now at the city dump.

But I haven't done a really thorough search. I could have stuck it in another disc case, even one that already had a disc in it. I've done that before.
