My promo CD single contains the following:

Jane Child-"Don't Wanna Fall In Love" (PRO-CD-3867)
1-LP Version (listed & actual 4:04)
2-Remix/Edit (listed 4:20; actual 4:18)
3-12" Remix (listed 7:50; actual 7:49)

I also own a commercial CD single for this song (9 21526-2). I won't detail all of the mostly long versions on it, but two of the tracks are shorter, and might be of interest to some:

3-(non-described version) (listed 4:28; actual 4:29)
4-7" Remix Version (listed 4:00; actual 3:59)

I have what I think is the 4:18 "Remix/Edit" on a TM Century disc and on Hitmakers Vol. 31. It's pretty much the same song structure, but mixed much hotter. No wonder the song sounded so fantastic on the air!

My 45 has the LP version on it.

Ron, that's interesting info! I always thought my TM GoldDisc was just the LP version. Looking at Jim's promo CD run time info, it's obviously not. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I just looked up info at allmusic on the commercial CD single, Jim. They have your non-described version listed as "Acapercapella." The song sample doesn't have music behind it--just vocals. The 7" Remix is a short version of the Teddy Riley remix, which has a new jack swing feel to it. Assuming that the Remix/Edit on the promo CD single is the "hotter" mix that Ron mentioned, that mix is not the same as the 7" Remix.

my commercial cassingle issued as warner 19933 does not state a version on the cardboard sleeve but the cassingles face states "lp version" (4:04) and the 2 tracks are listed below

1-don't wanna fall in love (lp version) 4:04
2-worls lullabye (lp version) 3:00

I have a 45 and a cassette-single, and they both have the LP version.

The only place I have ever seen the single remix was on a February 1990 Warner (WEA) promo compilation CD, and the promo single.

Most stations I heard aired the LP version back in 1990 though. Only TWO stations I heard ever aired the remix, though it really did sound better on-air I agree.

Hmmm... Since the two tracks cited from the "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" commercial maxi-CD single (the 4:29 non-described version and the "7" Remix" running 3:59) are very different remixes which likely got little to no radio airplay, I wonder if these remixes should even be mentioned in the database since it may create some confusion for subscribers trying to seek the "hit" versions on CD they're most accustomed to hearing on the radio? Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I just discovered something of likely minor interest: the covers of the vinyl LPs and the CDs of the source album have different covers.

The CD cover photo is more zoomed in and has her nose-to-ear ring in full light:

The LP cover has her resting her forehead against her hands (although she's still looking at the camera), and chain is more in shadow.

The words "Jane Child" are smaller in relation to the photo on the LP than on the CD.

...Just for fun, has anybody checked to make sure the CDs and LPs have identical mixes?

I have no idea why they'd have different mixes... but I also have no idea why they have different covers in 1989, either...

(I don't have the vinyl, or I'd check it myself.)

Just going by memory here, but I recall my 12" single has a cover much like the "LP cover" you show here. I never even knew this was even released as an LP in 1990. (I know the copyright date says 1989, but the promo single for "...Wanna" was issued in February 1990.)

The 12" had a cool "New Jack Swing" remix that sounded especially great on the turntable for some reason. My second 12" with a generic Warner Brothers sleeve has an extended mix which seems to be adapted from the radio remix discussed here.

Would it be correct to say there are three basic "mixes" of this song, edited to various lengths:

1) LP mix
2) Remix (LP structure, but "hotter")
3) New Jack Swing remix

?

My promo CD akin to the one that the original post here mentions is one of about 3 Discovery Systems discs I have that have failed, and oddly tracks 1 and 3 will rip but track 2 is dead. Anybody have a copy not a Discovery pressing?

I think possibly all copies were pressed by Discovery Systems. I just tried ripping mine, and EAC returned errors for tracks 1 & 3, but it ripped track 2 without any problems. There was only one "suspicious position" error on track 1 and three errors on track 3. Thankfully, these small errors are not audible, so it appears the error correction was able to fix them well enough.

Coincidentally, only a few days ago, I made a list of promo CDs I own that I know for sure are manufactured by Discovery Systems based on what is documented on Discogs. I had planned in the next few days to pull all of them and attempt to rip them. Here's what I know for certain so far (which does not include full-length CDs or TM Century HitDisc/GoldDiscs):

Rhino Records
Monkees "Heart And Soul" (PRCD 1)

Fever Records
Cover Girls "Inside Outside" (no catalog #)
Cover Girls "Promise Me" (no catalog #) (my copy will no longer play at all)

Virgin Records
Millions Like Us "Guaranteed For Life" (PRCD9412)

I.R.S. Records
The Truth "Weapons Of Love" (L33-17302)

Arista Records
Barry Manilow with Kid Creole & The Coconuts "Hey Mambo" (ASCD-9665)
Daryl Hall & John Oates "Everything Your Heart Desires" (ASCD-9685)
Whitney Houston "Love Will Save The Day" (ASCD 9721)

Warner Bros., Reprise, Sire
Madonna "You Can Dance (Single Edits of Album Remixes)" (PRO-CD-2892)
New Order "True Faith" (PRO-CD-2899)
David Lee Roth "Just Like Paradise" (PRO-CD-2920)
Rod Stewart "Lost In You" (PRO-CD-3052)
Good Question "Got A New Love" (PRO-CD-3119)
Siedah Garrett "K.I.S.S.I.N.G." (PRO-CD-3123)
Erasure "Chains Of Love" (PRO-CD-3140)
Book Of Love "Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls" (PRO-CD-3197)
Bullet Boys "Smooth Up" (PRO-CD-3251)
Information Society "Walking Away" (PRO-CD-3253)
R.E.M. "Orange Crush" (PRO-CD-3306)
Karyn White "Superwoman" (PRO-CD-3375)
Bullet Boys "For The Love Of Money" (PRO-CD-3393)
Ice-T "High Rollers" (PRO-CD-3415)
Elvis Costello "Veronica" (PRO-CD-3424)
Eric Clapton "Pretending" (PRO-CD-3789)
Jane Child "Don't Wanna Fall In Love" (PRO-CD-3867)
Faith No More "Epic" (PRO-CD-3913)
Jane's Addiction "Been Caught Stealing" (PRO-CD-4039)
Al B. Sure! "Missunderstanding" (PRO-CD-4423)
Betty Boo "Doin' The Do" (PRO-CD-4450)
Chicago "Chasin' The Wind" (PRO-CD-4602)
Tara Kemp "Hold You Tight" (PRO-CD-4617)
Keith Washington "Kissing You" (PRO-CD-4671)
R.E.M. "Losing My Religion" (PRO-CD-4707)
R.E.M. "Shiny Happy People" (PRO-CD-4888)

As I come across others, I will update this list. Feel free to also post additional titles that I have not yet discovered (no pun intended).

Add Whitney Houston "Love Will Save The Day" (ASCD 9721)
as also being manufactured by Discovery Systems, and
that one won't rip, either (though it used to... it's
something that's happened over the years).

A long time ago I was able to rip the Madonna "You Can
Dance" promo CD using a stand-alone DVD player hooked up
to my old stand-alone Philips CD burner, but I have no
way of knowing if there were any errors... I didn't hear
any. But the DVD burner played through the whole thing
where the CD player wouldn't.

Good call, Brian! My copy of "Love Will Save The Day" also won't rip. I believe elcoleccionista sent me wav files that do play perfectly if you need them.

I don't own it, but pretty sure the Whitney Houston "So
Emotional" promo CD single was also pressed by Discovery
Systems.

My copy of "So Emotional" was not pressed by Discovery Systems, but I suppose it's possible some were.

Many of these issues are not new. Discovery Systems was a CD manufacturer from about 1987 to 1991. The reason they were used often for promos is because the labels didn't have to meet large minimum quantities, and they could turn things around quickly. Unfortunately, they had quality control issues in the manufacturing process that caused the information (aluminum) layer to remain partially unsealed.

In disc production, the plastic disc is the bottom layer, followed by the silver information layer, which is then coated with a lacquer that seals out moisture and air. The label is then silkscreened on top.

When the information layer is exposed to the air, it oxidizes over time and makes the disc either play with errors or become totally unreadable. It's not something that typically happens overnight, so sometimes a disc can "go bad" (i.e. laser rot) many years down the road. In the case of Discovery Systems, not all of their discs are defective, but if I had to guess, I'd say around 30% of the discs I have from them are either going bad or have already become Frisbees.
