Pat:

In the database, you denote "45 version" and "LP version" designations for CD appearances of 3 Doors Down's "Be Like That". Was there ever an official commercial single release for the song? I don't recall ever seeing one.

I do have a promo CD single somewhere in my library. I'll fish it out and report back with the track listing and run times.

You are correct, the two different versions are due to the original LP version and the soundtrack to American Pie 2 version, not 45 and LP differences.

If anyone's interested, my copy from RPM Top Hits USA is listed as the American Pie Edit. The RPM site also lists an acoustic version, though I don't own that. Not sure if that was a 3rd version available, or the LP version.

I found my promo CD single of 3 Doors Down's "Be Like That". The inserts and CD states "from American Pie 2" and was issued on Republic/Universal catalog #UNIR 20540-2. The disc contains the following tracks and actual run times:

1) AMERICAN PIE EDIT - 3:55 (printed time: 3:57)
2) ACOUSTIC VERSION - 4:23 (printed time: 4:15)
3) ALBUM VERSION - 4:25 (same as printed time)

I was living in Nashville at the time this song was a hit. My general recollection is Top 40 stations played the "American Pie Edit", while rock stations opted for the "Album Version". Track 1 is an edit of Track 3. Track 2 replaces the electric guitars with acoustic ones. (Does anyone recall hearing the "Acoustic Version" on the radio?)

The lyrics are different in the American Pie Edit.

Right you are, Gary. The first three verses are indeed different...

American Pie Edit:
He spent his whole life being too young
To live the life that's in his dreams
At night he lies awake and he wonders
Why can't that be me?

Album Version:
He spends his nights in California
Watching the stars on the big screen
And then he lies awake and he wonders
Why can't that be me?

As far as I can tell, the lyrics are the same throughout the rest of the song. Even so, the "Album Version" obviously cannot be edited to come up with the "American Pie Edit" as I had previously insinuated.
