Does anyone know if the LP version of Helen Reddy's "Emotion" can be edited to successfully create a stereo 45 version, or does the mono 45 have unique audio elements not present on the stereo LP (aside from the left/right channel panning of vocals and instruments)?

The stereo version has a faint cymbal beat in one channel early in the song that is not present on the mono version.
There is an Australian import that has a stereo edit of the album version that otherwise matches the 45. It's possible this stereo edit was the commercial single version in Australia.

I have the promo 45 if you'd like to use the stereo 45 version as a reference.
I don't know why the commercial single was mono. AFAIK Capitol hadn't issued a mono 45 in a couple years.

Hykker, I was also totally confused as to why the Capitol stock 45 I bought on 2/18/75 both boldly stated, and actually was in mono. And you're also right when you say it had been several years since any commercial Capitol 45 I'd bought was NOT issued in stereo. At the time I just assumed it was remixed for 45 release, and they wanted to also offer that mix to consumers. But when I later got a promo 45 for it, and both stereo & mono versions were included, I had to chuck that thoery, and I remain baffled as to why Capitol did it to this day. Unless, of course, they considered that faint cymbal beat that Brian hears only on the stereo mix to have been the difference between a hit record and a stiff!

The things you learn here! I never had a stock copy of "Emotion." Gonna have to compare the two sides of the promo. We played the Reddy record at my college station, but it was old hat by then, as we'd already done both the 1974 Patti Dahlstrom rewrite and the '73 Veronique Sanson original, "Amoureuse" (but passed on Kiki Dee's cover of the latter.)
The last all-mono Capitol stock 45 I remember buying new was Weird Al Yankovic's "My Bologna"/"School Cafeteria." You'd have thought that Cal Poly would have had stereo recording capabilities in all of the mens rooms on campus by then, but noooo. ;)

What's even more baffling is why they included the mono single version on her greatest hits LP & CD.

Thanks for the input, gentlemen. So is the stereo side of the "Emotion" promo 45 identical to the LP version then? Also, I don't have the 45 version of "I Am Woman" on CD, but I take it from Brian's last comment that the 45 is a different mix and therefore cannot be edited from the LP version?

Yeah, it's a slightly different mix. On the "I Am Woman" LP version, the twangy guitar plays all the way through the intro; on the 45 version, it stops halfway through.
Also, on the LP's first chorus, there's like a symphony string section that erupts right before the line, "Oh, yes, I am wise." On the 45 version, that doesn't come in until the second chorus; it's just a guitar leading into the first chorus. I prefer the 45 version... it builds more.

Thanks, Brian. Fortunately, the 45 version of "I Am Woman" has been issued on a handful of CDs.
