Minor addition to info about this radio-edit / single. I opened a new thread because the single vs. album is extremely large, loaded with info!

re:
----> "The Blackout Allstars - I Like It ==> Single version - 4:19*. Original album version - 3:43
leads me to believe that all 4:19 versions of the song containing the comment: (remixed) in the 10th edition are probably actually the "hit single" version. "

Yes, I'd have to agree with that. Also, I noticed my edition does not list the actual CD appearance of the full-length club mix the single was edited from. At the time, my trusty CD haunt manager told me the new CD it came out on was a Sony/Columbia v/a comp called "Global Basics - Dance Music For The New Millenium" (CK 67686). It's called the "D'Ambrosio Club Mix" (7:03).
So, oddly, this would be the LP version of the "hit" mix, but I'd have to assume the official "LP version" would still be the original soundtrack version.

Addition note: For some strange reason whoever edited it for the single got nostalgic for the 60's and decided the edit needed to be mono, the way it appears on Promo-Only, Hot-Hits, and anywhere I've heard the edit.
For anyone interested, the full length mix is quite normal stereo, and the single can easily be edited from it, as I've done. I'll leave my mono in the 60's, thank you.

hello Mark,

I too always wondered why I had this song in mono. I have the club mix on a Canadian Various Artists CD (Hit Zone 3) running 4:19. Then one day I heard the song as backing to a Ritz cracker TV ad, and it was STEREO! So, I tracked down a CD called "Total Dance Explosion" on Columbia which has the D'Ambrosio Club Mix, but edited. Here, it starts out mono, but is stereo starting at the first "that" about 15 seconds in. Then it mixes into the next track. I took the mono end of the Hit Zone 3 version and replaced the ending. SO mine goes back to mono on the last "that" at about 4:00. Kinda neat, actually!

I've also heard the original version from the soundtrack LP and 1994 movie "I Like It Like That". Glad they remixed it!

You can also find the 4:19 edit on the "AVP Summer Soundtrack", Sony 68217. I just checked and it's entirely in mono. Funny - I'd never noticed before.

The "Edit" of "I Like It," found on the stock CD single (38K 78455), has a strange mastering history, and I have an educated guess as to what happened.

In my library, I have a CD-R promo made by DB Plus Digital Services. This disc calls the song “I Like It Like That” and says "KTU Edit" and "from Global Basics." I believe NY station WKTU was one of the first to start spinning it, and they created their own edit from the Global Basics compilation CD. Whoever made the edit made two big mastering goofs, though. First, they had their production board set to mono when dubbing it from the CD, as Mark and others above have pointed out. Second, they used a piece of equipment that rolled off all frequencies above 17K. It's quite possible they used a primitive digital editing workstation in the production studio.

After the song was starting to become a hit, the decision was made to use the KTU Edit as the official single version. The exact same mastering and edit was then included on the stock CD single, although the channels are evenly balanced and volume increased on the stock CD. The promo CD-R has a lower overall volume and the left channel is not quite as loud as the right.

As Mark points out, the good news is that the Global Basics album does not have the 17K+ frequencies rolled off, and it’s in stereo, making it easy to create the single edit the way it should've been done in the first place.

Does anyone have edit points to recreate the single mix
from the D'Ambrosio Club Mix?

No, but if you have a wav file of the club mix, would you mind sending it over? I may have the CD somewhere, but offhand, I don't know for sure. I'd be happy to send the edited version back to you.

Aaron,

Wish I had a wav or flac otherwise I only have the mix
streamed from Spotify at 320 bit rate.

Paging Mark Matthews!

No biggie. I'll dig around for the CD unless Mark comes to the rescue first :)

Did we ever resolve this one? A much younger eric_a
recreated the single edit from the stereo CD. I don't
recall all the specifics but remember finding that the
core of the club mix was intact - from the first chorus
through the last breakdown. The edits just chop up the lengthy intro
and outro. If no one else has figured this out, I'll pull
out the CDs.

My only access to the stereo club version was through
Spotify, which of course is lossy.

This is on my need list, I thought Aaron was digging it up to do one of his pristine edits to match what the CD single should have been to what we all heard on the radio..

I'm still hunting through my CD collection to see if I have that V/A Global Basics
CD. I haven't yet found it.

Oh, sorry guys I never saw this thread until now. Aaron, I know exactly where my copy of "Global Basics" is ..i'll pull it tonight and send you the wav.

I'd upload my single edit but I only saved it as an mp3 for my play library. But as you know it's a very easy edit. (I dare even say a "lazy" edit).
