My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:19), an actual time of (3:18), exactly as does 4 of its 5 "original recording" database entries. However, the other database CD, on K-Tel, runs (3:29), but has no database notation. Could this be the song's "LP length", or possibly a "previously unreleased extended version?"

Jim:

I have the 3:29 version of Captain & Tennille's "You Never Done It Like That" on the High Energy Volume 1 K-Tel 3908 CD you reference and, after performing an A-B comparison, found it to be a very different mix than the 3:18 version appearing on the duo's Ultimate Collection CD on Hip-O 314520901. The keyboard and percussion are altogether different on the High Energy disc and the song's overall sound is very tinny and thin compared to the Ultimate Collection CD.

So does anybody have any idea where this remix of "You Never Done It Like That" on the High Energy disc comes from?

Todd, this song originally appeared on the duo's mid-1978 LP, "Dream", which I don't happen to own. Based on your findings, however, I actually suspect that the version appearing on that K-Tel CD was, in fact, the original LP version, and that the "remixing" probably occured while A&M was preparing the song for release as a single. Would anyone else be able to confirm this, by providing its "LP version" details?

The database shows the CD release of Dream (R2 Entertainment 7504) with a 3:18 run time, which mirrors the 45 version length. Of course, it's possible the vinyl LP could've featured a different mix (at least initially).

Todd, I'm a huge Captain & Tennille fan. I have all their albums on both the original Japanese CD issues and the lousy R2 remasters. I also have their "Dream" album, which is what the song is from, on vinyl. If you want to email an MP3 my way, I'll see what I can figure out.

Paul sent me the file, and, as I suspected, it's a re-recording. Not sure if it's just a longer version of the same re-recording that's on their "Twenty Years of Romance" CD, but it's definitely not the original. Different lead vocal, different background vocals, different instrumentation.

Maybe it's just because I'm such a big fan and so familiar with the song, but I could tell from the very first vocal line that it was a re-recording. It sounds to me like it was recorded years after the original.

Pat, this should be marked "Rerecording" in the database.

Good job, Brian... I knew I could count on your sharp ear! Funny thing about the K-Tel CD is the front cover claims: "ALL ORIGINAL HITS - ALL ORIGINAL STARS".

Nice job, Brian & Todd! I had never previously known of a "re-recording" appearing on CD, for any of the Top 40 hits performed by Toni & Daryl.

Haven't played my 45 of this in nearly 15 years but it should be noted
there are slight mix differences no ones caught to date. The first comes
at about the 51 second mark where Toni sings "how long has this been
going on"where the original Dream LP and Cd appearances to date all
have Daryl playing a synth part that's missing on my 45 and the other
difference is at the 2:03- to 2:21 passage where Toni sings the bridge
where theres a section i would describe as Haunted House synth part
that finishes with a jet fly over is mixed much lower in the 45 than the
LP
and CD appearances. I have compared my original A&M Dream LP,
Dream Japanese and US pressed CDs, Hip-O Ultimate Collection, and
Universal Millennium Collection and they all have the LP mix. Unless
someone's just picked up the C&T Icon disc that just came out and its
there it should be noted the true 45 mix has never made it to CD.

Thanks, Glen! I have that Dream LP and the Hip-O best of
comp, but never owned the 45.

Every time I turn around, there's another 45 I have to
get!

Hah! I was just digging around in a box of
45s I had that I thought I didn't need anymore, and lo and
behold! I found my copy of the A&M 45 "You've Never Done
It Like That" in the picture sleeve. Now I remember
buying it. I'll have to do a needledrop of it soon.

i have a cdr copy of the song that i got from somewhere and
it is definitely the 45 version; so the vinyl 45 version is
available somewhere on cd, probably an import.......i just
A/B'ed the song again tonight and it matches perfectly to
my vinyl 45..........it has the haunted house and jet
sounds at the break 2:03-2:21.......i don't have the
original 'dream' lp to compare it to....if anyone needs a
copy of either the vinyl 45 version or the correct digital
version please send me a pm....hits man, i just sent you a
copy for your review...

ok...after looking through ebay and searching the dozens of
cds that contain the song.....i believe, and, just going
from memory here.....the cd that has the proper 45 version
is on the cd titled 'scrapbook' issued on the karussell
label.....it has palm trees on it and is blue and orange in
color...does anyone own this cd and can they confirm my
hunch....

I own a copy of the Scrapbook CD that's a UK press I believe (it's
currently in storage but the disc itself is in my iTunes) it has the black
cover with the bad C&T logo replica on it and unless different countries
pulled their own tape copies or there was a stealth remaster mine has
the LP version. The track listing is definitely the same. The synth part I
listed as missing at 51 seconds is back
on it. I also own the Japanese A&M Digitally Remastered Best from
1998 that has the LP version as well.

I have lived with my needle drop of the 45 this past week and of the
Dream LP and now have realized the other effect I lists as being mixed
lower later in the song is really likely at the same level on both. The
lower quality styrene of my 45 being the misleading culprit. I would say
that the one synth part removed is really the only difference between
the two versions.

No, I would say that your original assessment was spot
on. I did a needledrop of my pristine styrene copy the
other day and it sounds good. I have been told it sounds
fantastic.

Good to know... I bought an unplayed store stock copy on Ebay that arrives today so I look forward to hearing it. Captain & Tennille's 70's singles are my guilty pleasure and I have no problem with proclaiming it yet keeping my masculinity intact.

Hi all,
well i was looking forward to hearing any mix difference
on the 45 for this song. I've always loved it, and
welcome any other version.

I'm afraid is my professional opinion is that i have been
chasing my tail here, every version of this song is
identical, i have yet to hear the slightest difference at
:51, the synth effects at 2:00, or anywhere.

I have compared:
1)LP Version from my own "Dream" vinyl LP.
2)CD version provided by Ed from his import
3) 45 Dub from a friend in MA (thanks Tom)
4) 45 Dub from Long Island (thanks Ed)
5) Cd version from "Ultimate - Complete Hits"

I even did a synch track comparing the LP dub and 45 dub,
one in each channel. This reveals any slight change in
level of any overdub, or any mixing difference at all.
There is none.
The one and only difference i confirmed is the LP and the
45 have the left and right channels swapped.
That is all. Unless there is another pressing of this 45
that didn't make it to the east coast, my conclusion is
the 45 and LP version are the identical mix, but the left
and right channels are reversed.

I'll get the matrix numbers from my (now) two stock 45's when I get home this afternoon but both copies are missing that little muskrats running off synth part at the end of "how long has this been going on." I just did my second dub Friday night of my new copy and as I stated earlier the effect I thought was mixed lower at the bridge sounds about equal to my original Dream LP. This single took a lot longer to take hold with Top 40 radio after three singles that failed to do well outside of A/C so perhaps the 45 mix was changed during its run. (It took 16 weeks to peak at #10 in BB). I was three at the time of it's release so perhaps we have someone who can tell us if they bought it early or later in it's chart run. I've owned Dream on CD, cassette, 8-track, and 3 vinyl copies and detected no other differences in mixes of this or any other song on it so I doubt they would've pulled the album to reissue it for that one change. It was released during the run of the first single "I'm On My Way" that tanked so it never really took off sales wise only hitting #131 but managed to stay on the album listings for 30 weeks. I always figured it had one initial LP pressing due to all the cut outs I've seen and that was it.

Ok, enough of my rambling LOL.... back later with my matrix nums....

I'm confused with the last post mentioning muskrats. I'm pretty sure
that's a different song not "You Never Done It Like That."

Yeah, if it has the sound of muskrats, Glen are you referring to their single "Muskrat Love", which also has the sound of muskrats?
