Ok, not a top 40 hit, but being the holiday season I thought I would ask. Has the single version ever appeared on CD? I only have a Canadian promo 45, so I'm not even sure if it was available commercially. In addition to being shorter than the LP version, part of the vocal track is removed near the end of the song, so it can't be recreated from the version on the "Great White North" cd.

How long is the time listed on your promo 45? The version I have on CD, (presumably the LP version), runs 4:45.

Mercury issued two, consecutively-numbered Bob & Doug McKenzie singles, in late 1981. Their only hit, "Take Off", was on Mercury 76134, and was obviously issued as both a commercial and a promo 45. But the Mercury 76133 release, "Twelve Days Of Christmas", as best I can recall, was an intentional, promo-only 45, with the same listed (3:08), actual (3:05) edited version on both sides. Despite the consecutive stock #'s, I don't recall Mercury working "Take Off" to us at all, until after Christmas 1981, and it didn't debut on Billboard until 1/30/82. I'm sure the "Twelve Days Of Christmas" promo 45 was given to our station simply to give the Christmas song on their current LP a chance to garner some 1981 holiday radio airplay (and possibly generate some additional album sales, too, perhaps?) before the "Take Off" part of Mercury's marketing plan for "Bob & Doug" was put into action.

I have a 12" single, which I believe is a promo, with "Take Off" b/w "12 Days
of Christmas." For these, I think they used the LP versions, with the long
spoken intros. I can't verify at the moment, as I'm in the process of moving,
with my record collection 90 miles away at the moment.

Eric, you are correct. I've seen a listing for the 12" online for "Twelve Days...", and the time listed is 4:42, making it the LP version.

Went to my 12" section, and found the promo 12" that you guys have just brought up, with a stock # of "MK 184". "Twelve Days Of Christmas" has a listed time of (4:40) and an actual time of (4:42), while "Take Off" has an actual time of (3:55) and an actual time of (3:54). And Eric, you are correct, in that both sides of this 12" single featured the LP versions.

This song has finally surfaced on a collection called
the "Classic 80's Christmas Album" and is the 45
version. On iTunes, you have to buy the whole collection
for 9.99.
The disappointment is that it's a dub from probably a
promo 45.
Has anyone tried recreating the single version? I seem
to recall it can't be done because they talk over part
of the intro.

John, I have just shot you out a dub of my promo 45. You can then at least
confirm or refute your suspicions that the single version can't be recreated
from the LP version.....

You're welcome, John. After I re-read the thread, i realized I likely
misunderstood your true question here, which I now think was "Has anyone
here already done a digital 45v file recreation?", as the $10 you shelled out
on iTunes had likely already snared you the vinyl dub I'd sent.
The good news is that Aaron saw my reply to you, and he asked me to also
shoot him out a dub of my promo 45, as a personal fave of his (and mine.) If
we're lucky, "Santa K" just might be able to churn out the desired digital 45v
sometime soon, if I know him, now that he's "on the scent". :)

You are correct, John. It cannot be created using the LP version, and,
in fact, there are several differences. Thanks to Jim, I was just able to
hear the actual 45 version.
The intro of the 45 version starts with a synthesizer for about :08, and
then the first vocal is "OK, now, this is our Christmas song..." On the
LP, this synth starts fading in for about :05 (not the full :08) and is
overlapped by the line "which I believe are the mystery days."
On the LP, there is a howling wind sound effect that continues until they
start singing, and this sound effect has been completely removed from
the 45 version.
On the ending of the 45, there are several spoken parts that have been
removed from the mix. For instance, over the last sung line "in a tree,"
the 45 has removed the lines:
Where did you learn to do that?
Uh, albums?
Boy.
The ending is also much shorter on the 45, removing most of the back-
and-forth between Bob & Doug and leaving mostly just the backing
track playing through the fadeout. Again, this cannot be created by
editing the LP version; they have been removed from the mix.

Thanks for bringing up this new collection. Upon further investigation, The Classic Christmas '80s Album is also available as a physical CD (Legacy 514134), and upon seeing the complete track listing, I thought it looked pretty cool (which I can rarely say about new releases nowadays). Therefore, I ordered a copy of the CD, although it has yet to arrive. You can actually get the physical CD for quite a bit less than the $9.99 that iTunes charges for the whole album; both Amazon (here) and Target (via eBay - here) sell it for just $6.59. The track listing on the back insert of the CD does boldly state "(Single Version)" next to "Twelve Days of Christmas" by Bob & Doug McKenzie, as well as "Christmas is the Time to Say 'I Love You'" by Billy Squier (was there ever any other version of that one???). It's also worth noting that this CD contains two top 40 hits, so it belongs in Pat's on-line database (and I see that it's not yet included, despite being out since October 2). They are track 3, "Hazy Shade of Winter" by The Bangles (1988), and track 13, "This One's for the Children" by New Kids on the Block (1989)...
It turns out The Classic Christmas '80s Album is actually a slightly modified re-issue of two older U.S. Christmas CDs, neither of which I have: 2008's Awesome! 80s Christmas: Holiday Party Starter (Compass Productions 967410030) and 2014's '80s Christmas (Somerset Group 62291) (these two have an identical track listing, and in the same running order; the latter was an exclusive at Target stores). The Classic Christmas '80s Album replaces "Please Come Home for Christmas" by Pat Benatar, "(Rockin') Winter Wonderland" by The Fabulous Thunderbirds, "Sleigh Ride" by Air Supply, and "Rock and Roll Christmas" by George Thorogood & the Destroyers on the two older collections w/ "Do You Hear What I Hear?" by Whitney Houston, "Run Rudolph Run" by Dave Edmunds, "Christmas Time is Here" by Ray Parker Jr., and "Slick Nick, You Devil You" by Fishbone; the other 11 tracks are the same, albeit shuffled in a different running order. Both of the older collections also feature "Twelve Days of Christmas" by Bob & Doug McKenzie (track 4), and while it's not specified on the packaging of either CD, it's probably safe to assume it's the 45 version on them as well (and no doubt also mastered from vinyl)! Both also include "Hazy Shade of Winter" by The Bangles and "This One's for the Children" by New Kids on the Block, so these two older CDs also belong in Pat's on-line database...

Yes, understood - not ideal, but I felt there were
enough other good songs on the CD that made it worth
the $6.59 that I spent on Amazon. :-) Thanks to the
Great White North album, I've had the LP
version of "Twelve Days of Christmas" on both cassette
& CD for years, but this will be the first time I've
had the 45 version - not even sure that I've heard the
45 version before! Like aaronk, I'm curious to know if
the 45 version found on the Christmas Comedy
Classics, Vol. 2 CD that cmmmbase mentioned is
from tape - if it is, I'll probably track it down,
too...
