The 45 version is made up of samples of a bunch of '50s and '60s hits. More precisely, the samples are samples of the actual hits from the '50s and '60s. The US 45 version was apparently the same as the UK 45 version, and it turns up on the British Now That's What I Call Music 15 compilation (Virgin EMI Polygram UK CD NOW 15, 1989), with an actual running time of 4:04.
I thought I could recreate the 45 by editing down the LP version from The Album (Atco/Music Factory 7 91322-2, 1989), but the LP version has some of the sampled songs rerecorded! It appears that the Jive Bunny people couldn't get the rights to "Rock Around The Clock" and a few others for the full CD, so they rerecorded the segments they needed. Either that, or they decided that the relatively low-fi sound of some of the '50s tracks needed a sonic upgrade - somehow, I doubt this scenario.
A similar situation happened two years earlier in 1987 for "Pump Up The Volume"; the samples are different in the US and the UK due to licensing issues. And the Stars On 45 tracks also vary, depending on country.
For giggles, you might want to hear the "Swing The Mood" version on a British compilation called The Ultimate Party Animal (Global Records RADCD47, 1996) - it's 100% rerecorded from scratch, including the looped drum line. Really awful, and unintentionally hilarious. It's also billed just to "Jive Bunny", who had presumably left the Mastermixers for a solo career...

Thanks for the heads up, Ron. For YEARS, I've played the LP version at 6:08. While the older guests love it, it's just too long. Just ordered a 45 version a few minutes ago!
Can anyone verify the time of the other Jive Bunny release "That's What I Like." I have what's labeled a Radio Mix from TM Century with a run time of 4:01.

Really? I bought the cassette single back in the day and at least the Elvis cuts were not original, and that's the version they played on the radio where I was at the time.

Yes, I think you're right that even the 45 version does not contain ALL original versions of the hits. But the LP version contains more re-recordings than the 45 version does.
In regards to Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock," I've never tried to slow it down to the same pitch of the original recording, but my guess would be that even if you did, it wouldn't be the original recording. In the Jive Bunny song, it's pitched up almost to the point of sounding like the Chipmunks.

Pat, I just noticed that you updated the info for the Jive Bunny follow-up #69 1990 BB chart entry, "That's What I Like" into the db, under "Swing The Mood", by mistake. I was just trying to answer a "piggy back" Jive Bunny question that Eriejwg had raised, about Jive Bunny's obscure follow-up chart entry inside one of the earlier posts. But to assist you here, Pat, I have just pulled my actual promo CD single for "Swing The Mood" (PR-3039-2), and here are the ACTUAL details for that Jive Bunny #11 BB hit song:

I should have a 45 in my hands for "Swing The Mood." Have listened to Ed's correct 45 version and will be able to compare if they are the same when my 45 arrives.

as i mentioned to john recently, the radio mix, which is track one on the promo cd single, has the drum roll intro truncated ever so slightly as compared to the radio mix from my cassette single.....track 2 on the promo cd single has the correct intro drum roll on it.....awhile back i had aaron merge the 2 versions to come up with the proper 45/single version....this should be noted in the db...

I compared my 45 of "That's What I Like" (actual run time of 4:03) to the LP version on The Album, and you can almost recreate the 45, except for two sections.
The first 3:23 of both 45 and LP are identical.
Then follows a sample "oh baby that's what I like". On the 45 it transitions back into "Hawaii 5-0"; on the LP it's got a different drum fill and goes off into some other samples. The 45 "oh baby" can't be recreated from the LP.
The 45 also ends cold on the last note, where the LP has an extra a cappella "oh baby that's what I like like like" tacked on at the end.
Interestingly, the B-side of "That's What I Like" is an instrumental called "Pretty Blue Eyes", which is a straightforward big band-style arrangement without any samples, albeit with a drum loop. The producer/arranger/taken-from-"Jive Bunny The Album" credits are erroneously copied from the A-side, though, even through it clearly says "Unavailable on LP" elsewhere on the label.

My "Swing The Mood" 45 arrived today. Labeled as the Radio Mix, 7-99140, deadwax is ST-89C-57767-2.
Listed time is 4:02, actual is 4:04.
Will be sending Ed a copy for his analysis.

I just found a copy of the "Swing The Mood" promo CD single Atco PR 3039-2 referenced above, and track 1 ("Radio Mix") is missing the first four beats of the song, which are present on both the 45 and the UK Now CD.

12 years later is there still no readily available 45 radio edit out there?
The album version is too long;
iTunes seems to have a bunch of odd re-recordings…

Yes I can confirm this is not likely to be issued on any
V/A comp in future, unless it is made in another
country. And at this late stage....well... these ships
have sailed.
In the U.S, they changed things after the big medley
craze of the 80s. Now, to license a medley you have to
get separate permission from each owner of the masters
used in the medley AND you have to pay full publishing
fees to each copyright holder for every song. This of
course adds up to an outrageous amount of money for one
medley.
This is why medleys on US CDs have been very rare indeed.
Record club CDs however were under a different rule -
they would only have to pay a small bulk fee for the
entire disc. That's sort of how it works in Europe. And
if it was a budget record club comp or a free item that
could only be got with the purchase of other CDs, they
didn't have to pay anything.
A good example of that is the "Keep On Dancing" comp from
the BMG record club. It has several medleys on it. They
didn't have to pay anything.

Even though the single version isn't likely to appear in
the US anytime soon, it should still be fairly easy to
track down a copy of the "Swing The Mood" CD Single from
Discogs or eBay, depending on how much you're willing to
spend and how long you're willing to wait for it. (You
might have to get it from another country). I bought a
Made In Japan 3" CD Single of it from eBay years ago, and
it has the single version.
