My friend EdTop40 has asked me to detail what I happen to have for her Top 40 hits on promo CD singles. She was always one of the more prolific artists for generating more than one P CD S for her hits. As a result, I'm not at all surprised with Ed's request here. I have the promo CD single info ready now for her first 3 hits. The promos for her later hits, "The One I Gave My Heart To", "Are You That Somebody?" and the airplay hit "One In A Million" are in a different, currently buried part of my collection; I'll try to un-earth them by Sunday night.

Aaliyah-"Back & Forth" (JDJ-42173-2)
1-LP Version (listed & actual 3:51)
2-Mr. Lee & R. Kelly's Remix (listed 3:44; actual 3:43)
3-Mr. Lee's Radio Remix (listed 3:51; actual 3:50)
4-Ms. Mello Radio Mix (listed & actual 3:50)

Aaliyah-"Back & Forth" (CHR Edits) (JDJ-42233-2)
1-No Rap (listed 3:47; actual 3:48)
2-No Rap/No Intro (listed 3:47; actual 3:48)
3-No Rap/No Intro/No Talk (listed 3:47; actual 3:49) **
** - (This is the version we played in 1994.)
4-LP Version (listed & actual 3:51)

Aaliyah-"At Your Best (You Are Love)" (JDJ-42236-2)
1-Non-described version (listed 4:43; actual 4:49)

Aaliyah "At Your Best (You Are Love)" (JDJ-42241-2)
   (The R. Kelly Remixes)
1-Gangstar Child Remix (listed & actual 4:30)
2-Stepper's Ball Remix (listed: None; actual 3:09)
3-LP Mix (listed 4:43; actual 4:49)
4-LP Mix - No Intro (listed 4:28; actual 4:27)

Aaliyah-"If Your Girl Only Knew" (PRCD-6816-2)
1-Radio Edit (listed & actual 3:55)
2-Remix (listed 4:43; actual 4:42)
3-Single Mix (listed 4:40; actual 4:50)

More to follow...

My station got a cd single in from Jive that is numbered JDJ-42265-2 for "At Your Best(You Are Love)". The single is labeled LP Mix - No Intro (listed 4:28; actual 4:27)

However, on the cover of the jewel box there is a big pink sticker that says "At Your Best(You Are Love)" CHR Edit - 4:28.

GREAT additional info, Gary! I know both Ed and I really appreciate it. Man, the total count of promo CD singles issued for Aaliyah may actually run even deeper than I had already imagined!

Part 2, as promised:

Aaliyah-"The One I Gave My Heart To" (PRCD 8246)
1-Radio Mix (listed & actual 3:53)

Aaliyah-"One In A Million" (PRCD 6935)
1-Album Version (listed & actual 4:30)
2-Instrumental (listed & actual 4:30)
3-Acapella (listed 4:30; actual 4:29)

Aaliyah-"One In A Million" (PRCD 8012)
1-Album Edit (listed & actual 3:58)
2-Wolf-D Edit (listed & actual 3:56)
3-Geoffrey C Edit (listed & actual 3:59)
4-Dark Child Edit (listed 3:52; actual 3:51)

Ed, my promo CD single for 1998's "Are You That Somebody?" is currently not where it is supposed to be, although I'm certain I do have it. If/when it turns up, I'll add its details to this thread. Unless, of course, a "Good Promo CD Single Samaritan" can come to our aid in the interim!

Unfortunately, I don't have either promo CD for "Are You That Somebody;" however, I believe this one also has at least two different singles. If my memory is correct, the first single contains the LP version as the lead track and possibly the instrumental as the second track.

The second promo CD contains the "Edit" as track one, which removes Timbaland from the intro, giving top 40 DJs a place to talk over the intro. This is the copy we used to play at my old station. I'm sure there was at least one more track on this promo CD, but I don't remember if it was the LP version or instrumental.

It's highly possible that a "no talk/no rap" promo exists for this one, too, just like they issued for "Back And Forth."

Jim, that's interesting. I'm guessing more than just your station played that mix, as it also showed up as one of two versions of my TM Century library. (The other version is the "LP Version.") Typically, TM went with cut 1 of the singles, unless they knew that a different one was the hit or receiving more airplay. Our station always played the "LP Version." The "no rap/no intro/no talk" mix always sounded odd to me. It's kind of like taking Wyclef out of the Fugees' "Killing Me Softly."

There is a promo single for "I Don't Wanna," and I may have it in my collection. When I used to play the song on the air, I seem to recall the promo being sent to us on a CD-R, rather than an officially pressed CD. I'll take a look in my collection and report back.

I can't say for sure on "I Care 4 U" but it seems to me that we did get a promo at my old station. We never played it, so my memory isn't so great on that one.

Ed, yes I do have the "I Don't Wanna" 1-track promo CD (catalog #9305), which has the "Radio Mix." I don't have the CD with me to provide the actual time, but it is on a CD-R, rather than a factory pressed disc.

Actually, it's on Priority, since this was a soundtrack hit for her.

Ed, my good buddy, if you don't move on from Aaliyah sometime soon, you won't get to the hits of ZZ Top until you're 789 years of age!! :)

The only single format in which "More Than A Woman" was commercially released in the U.S. was as a 7-inch single, and it is the full (3:48) album version.

There is an additional super rare promo CD Single for "The One I Gave My Heart To". One track only, "The One I Gave My Heart To [Soul Solution Radio Edit]" (4:19). After the original single version
ran its course, radio stations began to play this amazing mix (think the Soul-Hex Edit of Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart"). This is the only place to obtain the Soul Solution Radio Edit. The club
mixes as the song was peaking, and a commercial release had already happened. Then, out of the blue, and long after the song had peaked, Blackground / Atlantic issued a commercial CD Maxi Single and
Vinyl Maxi Single on April 1998 due to the public demand. This new single was a double-A side single, "The One I Gave My Heart To / One In A Million", and unfortunately it only includes the Soul
Solution Club and Dub mixes.

It also appears to be on this Atlantic compilation:
