Another forgotten gem from 1988.

The parent album, If My Ancestors Could See Me Now, was a terrific piece of work, start to finish, with a dizzying array of talent, like Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel and Jeff Porcaro. It came out originally on Polydor, then was rereleased in 1995 on Iguana Records when Ivan released his second album.

"Not Just Another Girl" runs about 4:11 on the album, and about 3:55 on the 45. There are two edits on the intro, and here are instructions how to recreate the 45 from the album version:

Keep 0:00.0-0:05.2 of the album version.
Edit on snare hit.
Keep 0:10.3-0:15.5 of the album version.
Another edit on snare hit.
Keep 0:25.8-4:11.8 (end) of the album version.

The album has a very long fade-out, whereas the 45 has a slightly shorter fade-out that starts sooner, so your mixdown will be about the correct length but will appear to start fading a little earlier.

I seem to remember a promo CD single that went out to radio that had three identical tracks - all the 45 version (I think).

Crap:

I completely agree with you that "Not Just Another Girl" is a terrific pop/rock record. Perhaps the only thing more unfortunate than the song's #26 peak on the Billboard Hot 100 is the fact that this gem pretty much hasn't been heard anywhere on radio since 1988.

I do have a promo CD single for "Not Just Another Girl" on Polydor CDP 22. It shows the track listing and run time info as follows:

1. NOT JUST ANOTHER GIRL (7" version)- 3:54
2. NOT JUST ANOTHER GIRL (LP version)- 4:10

However, Track 2 is nowhere to be found on the disc! Only Track 1 is on here, which does indeed run 3:54 and appears to be identical to the commercial 45. (Polydor made this exact same mistake on Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" promo CD single). So, Pat, you should probably make a note of this in the database.

As for a promo CD single release of "Not Just Another Girl" that contains three identical tracks, I haven't run across one yet but perhaps one of our resident DJ experts may have?

my commercial 45 issued as polydor 887814 states a run time of 3:54 and runs 3:52 and is identical to the version found on the promo cd single and runs 3:52.....

At the risk of sounding nitpicky, yesterday I uploaded my promo CD single into my digital editing software; cranked the volume to the maximum; and then highlighted the audio wave file at the beginning point where I can hear the first trace of music to the end of the song's fade where I can no longer hear any music audio. Going from memory here, my digital timer showed the song's run time to be approximately 3:54.4, give or take a tenth of a second. When I get home, I'll check it again to be 100% certain. It's certainly possible that the vinyl commercial 45 might have a slightly different length.

For what it's worth, I have confirmed the 3:54 run time cited in my previous post.

The vinyl LP info.

"If My Ancestors Could See Me Now" (Polydor 834 896-1)
actual 4:09 listed 4:10

Original Sound Track "My Stepmother Is An Alien" (Polydor 837 798-1)
actual 4:04 listed 4:05

There is a length difference between two in the vinyl releases.

Wow, I never realized "Not Just Another Girl" was on the My Stepmother Is an Alien soundtrack CD. The database currently doesn't show the song as appearing on this CD either. (Speaking of which, I bet this lightweight and campy film would be a hoot to watch with a group of friends at an '80s movie party!)
