I have two different promo 45s for this. The first, featuring the standard EMI America label of the day, has the listed and actual (4:56) version on both sides, just like the commercial 45. We also got in a 2nd promo, with a blank white label (which was not all that unusual for Capitol/EMI during the 70s & 80s.) There is no time specified, but both sides have an actual time of (3:23). This edited version does not fade in; the first note features drumbeats.

Jim, is that 3:23 short DJ version just chopping off the front and fading early, or is it a remix?

Gene, it's not a remix. The intro is chopped, but it appears to retain the
ending of my stock 45. I'm not so hot at exact milli-second analysis, so
check your station's e-mail; I've forwarded this version to you. Please feel
free to analyze/share its exact edit point specifics.

It's indeed an edit. I reverse-engineered Aaron's recreation of the promo 45 version.
Start with the LP and commercial 45 version on Living In Oblivion Vol. 2 (1993), which should be extremely inexpensive nowadays and sounds excellent. It runs 4:56, and uses a drum machine that runs from 108.1 BPM at the beginning to 108.2 BPM at the end.
Remove the first 6.1 seconds of the commercial 45/LP version. That will leave about 0.02 seconds before the first drum beat.
Segment 1:
187 beats long
Begins 0.02 seconds before the first drum beat
Ends on a snare
Extends from 0:00 to 1:44.0 of the promo 45 edit.
Extends from 0:06.1 to 1:49.8 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Add a short fade-in for the first 0.02 seconds of this segment, just before the drumbeat. (At least that's what Aaron did - it sounds quite good.)
Remove the 84 beats from 1:49.8 to 2:36.4 of the LP version.
Segment 2:
5 beats long
Begins on a snare
Ends on a downbeat
Extends from 1:44.0 to 1:46.7 of the promo 45 edit.
Extends from 2:36.4 to 2:39.2 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Remove the 8 beats from 2:39.2 to 2:43.6 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Segment 3:
89 beats long
Begins on a downbeat
Ends on a snare
Extends from 1:46.7 to 2:36.1 of the promo 45 edit.
Extends from 2:43.6 to 3:33.0 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Remove the 64 beats from 3:33.0 to 4:08.5 of the commercial 45/LP version.
Segment 4:
Begins on a snare
Extends from 2:36.1 to 3:23.7 (end) of the promo 45 edit.
Extends from 4:08.5 to 4:57.8 (end) of the commercial 45/LP version.
Your mixdown will run 3:23, with edits at 1:44.0, 1:46.7 and 2:36.1.

I've just spent the past hour or so trying to recreate the
promo 45 version using the information above. Needless to
say, while the instructions are very detailed, the end
result doesn't sound too flash. Does it sound this bad on
the original vinyl? Or is it just one of those cases where
you need to hear the original in order to replicate it
successfully? Can anyone with a copy of it assist me
please?

While going through all of the songs from 1985 in the db last week, I happened to notice that two "Best of..."/"Greatest Hits"-type collections were missing from the listings, and interestingly, both are by highly-regarded female singers from the U.K., and in another parallel, both ended up being essentially "one-hit wonders" here in the U.S.: Alison Moyet and Kate Bush...
The one by Kate Bush, titled The Whole Story - which includes her lone U.S. top 40 hit, "Running Up That Hill" (track 7) - was issued on CD here in the U.S. in 1986 on EMI America 46414 (simultaneously w/ its vinyl LP & cassette counterparts - bought the latter myself at the time). Page on Discogs, complete w/ photos: KATE BUSH - "The Whole Story" (U.S. CD) The Whole Story appears to now be out-of-print here in the U.S., but luckily, it isn't extremely hard to find. Here's a used copy currently listed on eBay: KATE BUSH - "The Whole Story" (U.S. CD) And here's a second: KATE BUSH - "The Whole Story" (U.S. CD) (There's no question it's still very much in print as an import, anyway...)
Side note/fun fact: A special collector's edition of this song's original parent album, 1985's Hounds of Love, was issued here in the U.S.; EMI America made a limited pressing of the LP on marbled vinyl. What most people don't know is that the label also made a special marbled CASSETTE version for us tape fans as well, which I always thought was pretty cool. YES!!!! VERY cool!!! Even if it's all about millions of
streams it's still the height of cool to see an 80s new
wave classic revitalized by this, and introduced to a
younger audience. Totally awesome!

What's wild to me is that when I hear the song passively
(say on a store soundsystem or the radio) it doesn't sound
*retro* for a song almost 37 years old!
Despite the obvious LinnDrum programming it does not really
feel dated.
Maybe it's because it never got anywhere near overplayed in
the US.

aware of it from the video which got a lot of play on Boston's rock video tv station (the lamented, short-lived V66).

Yes, Hykker, I was implying that our messageboard members
from other countries might totally disagree with my
assessment because this track, I believe, reached the
coveted overplayed status in many non-US territories and
probably was getting continued broadcast as an "oldie".

So just to clarify there is:
5:42 - The 12'' version (On CD)
4:56 - The 45 and LP version (On CD)
3:23 - The Promo 45 (Not on CD)
So which one is the "hit" in 2022?

I don't know for sure what if anything is being serviced to radio and mobile DJs, but on Amazon it's all the 45 / LP version and the first results on YouTube show the 45 / LP version too.
The version used in the actual scene seems to be remixed, or rather extended out in some areas, to make it fit the scene better but I can't find a release to match that version. Discogs doesn't list a single release of the song in years.
Amazingly, the soundtrack to the season won't be out until September, and if Amazon's streaming platform is any indication, it won't include Kate Bush! That's going to be a massive lost opportunity if true.

This song was always a personal favorite. Not a lot of U.S. CHR airplay back in 1985, but it certainly got
lots of spins on my college radio station and of course, MTV played it quite a bit. Glad to see the renewed
popularity.

A friend reported, "Mediabase reported spins make it #48 on radio airplay. I'm not seeing it on either Mainstream Top 40 or Adult Top 40 on BDS Radio's site."
Another said our local alternative rock station ("The Edge") is playing it although I don't know how often.
This appears to be almost all Spotify, iTunes Store, and YouTube.

It's always nice when an 80's hit that should have hit Top 10 then surges back into the mainstream.
It's a great song that should have charted higher than #30.
