I've been exploring Amii Wood's songs beyond "Knock On Wood" and found
she has a number of good pop songs (not even disco). So I bought her "Best
Of" on Hot Productions CD, but it's all from clean vinyl. Her music was on
Ariola (at least much of what I'm looking for), which is owned by BMG/Sony, so
I don't think it would be a lost tapes issue. There's also a digital anthology
called "Knock On Wood: The Anthology" on a subsidiary of BMG, but I haven't
been able to find that it exists CD, and I couldn't tell if this one was from vinyl
or not. (The Hot Productions one is definitely vinyl.) Does anyone know any
CDs of hers (more likely import) that come from tape sources?

Does anyone have this Amii Stewart CD, "The Greatest Hits":

https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Hits-Amii-
Stewart/dp/B000A0GOY6/ref=sr_1_3?
crid=3PN88R079IMJ&keywords=amii+stewart+greatest+hits&qid=17
00953
072&sprefix=amii+stewart+greatest+hits%2Caps%2C138&sr=8-3

If so, could you possibly send me a few mp3s (other than Knock on Wood)
so I can see if this is from vinyl or tape?

Like I said, the CD above is from vinyl - "Best Of" on Hot Productions CD.

Mark M (or anyone) - do you know anything about her masters and if they'd
still be in existence?

I just ordred her S/T 1983 album on Funkytowngrooves. I've only started
liking her music, so I don't know but did FTG release anything else of hers
on CD?

Gordon:

Your trace of ownership of those tapes is accurate. Her
hits were a German production for Hansa records,
distributed by Ariola here in the states. BMG Germany
purchased Hansa and Ariola so the entire thing is now
under Sony/BMG.
The U.S. masters should be somewhere in Sony's vaults,
but they may not have been filed correctly which makes
them hard to find. In fact most of the Ariola America
masters ended up in shambles.
What was the license credit on the Hot Productions CD
with the disc dubs?

I think your best bet for master tapes on CD it to locate
a CD that is credited to BMG Berlin Musik GmbH or at very
least Sony/BMG Europe.

Thanks for the info. Mark, I just checked the Hot Productions CD and it
doesn't say where they licensed it from! I guess we shouldn't be shocked. It
has the 1996 credits (the release year of the CD), like the compilation
producer but nothing about the original.

Speaking of German releases, I just ordered a CD by Ramona Wulf (the
other lead singer of Silver Convention besides Penny McLean). I previously
only had a very well cleaned up vinyl CD from that ebay seller in Mexico
who does good cleanings but still.. I want tapes. Anyway, this CD I ordered
today on Discogs is a Japanese CD on Victor. And someone noted in the
credits "Licensed by Jupiter Records, Germany". So there's a good chance,
given the licensing credit being Germany, and the CD label being
Victor/Japan (generally, a reliable source), that this CD will be from tape.
UPDATE: I just checked the original 1977 LP of this Ramona album on
Discogs - and it was on Jupiter Records! That's a good sign.

I also ordered that Amii Stewart 1983 CD today, released on
funkytowngrooves. And I've never known them to release anything from
vinyl.

I'll now look for some Amii Stewart comp CDs or straight reissues from
Germany.

BTW, do most of the US CD releases of Amii's Knock on Wood come from
master tape? And where do they say they're licensed from?

Out of curiosity, I dug around to what's currently available on Qobuz from Amii Stewart. Here's a summary, including release dates that may not be reliable:

1984 - "Friends (Extended Version)" - 1 track
1990 - Pearls - 7 tracks
1994 - "Don't Stop" - 2 tracks
1999 - Knock On Wood - 14 tracks, "Knock On Wood" is 4:11 1985 remix
2005 - The Greatest Hits (blue cover) - 10 tracks, "Knock On Wood" is 4:10 1985 remix
2010 - "Together (Extended Version)" - 1 track
2011 - The Many Sides Of Amii Stewart - 16 tracks, including most of Pearls but no "Knock On Wood"
2011 - Amii Stewart : Great Classics Revisited - 20 tracks, all covers, including a "revisited" version of "Knock On Wood" that's new to this collection but adheres pretty closely to the 1979 arrangement
2012 - four (!) collections that have identical tracks listings: Greatest Hits (tan cover), The Complete Collection (lavender cover), The Ultimate Collection (yellow bar at top), and The Very Best Of (blue-green cover) - all have 14 tracks, "Knock On Wood" is 4:11 1985 remix on all four
2016 - Knock On Wood: The Anthology (fire on cover) - 27 tracks, four (!) different edits of "Knock On Wood", all labeled appropriately, including a "German Edit With Intro" that includes the flyover intro!
2022 - "Perfectly Beautiful" - 1 track

I was impressed with the sound on the 2016 Knock On Wood: The Anthology, at least on the various versions of "Knock On Wood". The four versions are the 1985 remix, and three hit edits of the 1979 mix. I didn't hear any vinyl artifacts on any of them (but I'm not the best at picking out vinyl artifacts). I don't know if this set exists in the real world on CDs, though. It's 2+ hours long.

Notable that the version labeled '7" Edit' is not the US 45 version with the flyover intro, but
probably the UK 45 version with the drums intro (which got airplay on some US stations anyway).

Unfortunately the CD release omits the "German Edit With
Intro."

The CD released by Music On CD appears to be from the master tapes, from
what I can tell.

Both the Hot Productions and Empire Musicwerks (The Greatest Hits) releases
are from vinyl I suspect.

As for the Funkytowngrooves release, that one sounds pretty good and I'd say
it's from the tapes.
