Lately a lot of catalogue maxi singles for Mariah
Carey and Janet Jackson have been issued as downloads
on Qobuz (and other venues), and a handful of Madonna.

The Madonna "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me" digital
maxis have added in the radio-only edits, such as the
Alternate Single Mix of "Rescue Me." All of Janet's
"Rhythm Nation"-era Japanese Maxis are available to
download on Qobuz, and so is the European-only maxi of
"Escapade" with the Hippiapolis mixes.

Mariah is the queen of all these reissues... they're
putting basically every mix of every Mariah Carey song
on her digital catalogue maxi singles, which all say
"Mariah 30" on them in honor of the 30th anniversary
of her first album.

Haven't bought any of them but thought I would bring
them to everyone's attention.

Qobuz has a lot of extended editions of 90's artists Brian. I know because as I put together each years promos etc I am finding a lot of them available for the first time digitally. Everyone from Taylor Dayne to Rick Astley and so on. Roxette has a nice digital catalogue selection, as does Ace of Base for example!

Janet's remix promos are all there now for purchase just like Brian W. said. Lots more available than 7 digital!

I've loved finally having digital versions of remixes only available on vinyl before, and a few that were altogether previously unreleased.

While I'd prefer CD reissues, Mariah's campaign for the nineties material last year was great. The standard bearer. Her golden era was done justice in the lead up to her autobiography, published last fall.

However, since these resumed in 2021, more recent digital releases for the singles from her later albums have been lacking. Entire singles, non-LP songs and whole sets of remixes have gone missing. Still, there's a lot there to listen to.

I believe aside from just one remix of "Because Of Love", Janet and Madonna's vault singles have been comprised of stuff already available on CD, some from promos and imports.

There's still a lot missing, but it's certainly better than it used to be and nice for those who don't own or otherwise have access to them.

Don't forget about Sony/Columbia's rarities cd with
unreleased and single only titles. It was just released
a few months ago and contains a live concert on the
second disc.

I just dropped a grand on Madonna's Japanese single box
form the mid 90's. It should be at the post office
tomorrow.

I think that Madonna singles box listed for between
$300-400 back in the mid 90's. I waited for a US
seller as items over $700 have customs charges
attached even though the buyer is already charged for
state sales tax. I'm not sure of the procedure and I
deal with a private, community post office out in the
countryside.

There's a current US seller on Ebay asking $4,750 for
the box set in similar grade. I thought $1K was a good
deal and I had many positive experiences with this
seller who specializes in Japanese imports mostly as a
"burn and turn" collector who wants the quality audio
but will part with the often out of print item as long
as he gets what he paid in. I've been networking with
him at Amazon for about 12 years now.

It's a shame that some of Mariah's singles were removed
from streaming sites. It should be cataloged with
folders so the site isn't bogged down with remixes when
many are looking for the album version. I heard one
site wasn't thrilled about offering alternates as it
would cause much confusion especially if not organized
properly.

Stupid question....are the new digital reissues remastered? Or are they
just ripped from cd?

I've been wondering that myself. I think I'll buy
"Someday," as there are three dub versions I don't have
that were only released on vinyl back in the day. I'll
let you know what I find.

Yes, they are newly remastered, as they, unfortunately,
suffer from brick-walling.

That's what I was afraid of. I was also going to say
that they must be remastered as they are available in
24-bit.

In fairness, by the mid '90s, much of the music was
already getting brick-walled. The earlier stuff has,
unfortunately, lost its dynamics. What good is 24-bit
when everything has been squashed. :(

Bought the "Someday" digital EP, and while I don't feel
it's badly brickwalled, it's definitely got some hard
limiting on it.

The degree of limiting seems to vary by song. There
doesn't seem to be any limiting on the Pianoapercapella
at all, while the New 12" House has pretty severe
limiting. I've seen worse, though. I've actually seen a
lot worse.

There's quite the market for rare Madonna fan club only,
limited stuff, and even bootlegs. I did see the Japanese
singles collection online with a sticker from Tower that
said $199. That was a guy who was asking $4,750 but I
think it could realistically go for half that.

I lost that much on Gamestop stock a couple weeks ago.
In retrospect, I'd rather have a Japanese Madonna box
set. :D

By the time you find out about a stock, you're too
late to the game. A lot of it's hype especially in
short term gain stocks.

These singles were all limited items that few stores
carried. Many mixes were promos, imports, and/or
mislabeled mixes. If you heard it, you probably
wouldn't know which mix it was without a sound sample.
I waited until youtube was popular to go for many of
the cd singles as I had to figure out which mix I was
interested in. I also quickly learned that longer
isn't usually better!

Makes sense. I bought all of the 12" singles when
they were current, so I've got my own favorite mix of
each song. Madonna's one of the few artists whose
remixes could stand on their own for being just as
good as the original versions, and in some cases,
better.
