I just noticed Rick Springfield seems to be in a rut at
3681, 3688 and 3689.

The Deniece Williams track seems odd to me. AC
stations here played that one for years frequently.

I'm quite surprised at some of the results so far -
seeing songs that peaked quite high on the Hot 100
rank below some songs which peaked lower.
For example, I didn't think we'd be seeing Paul Davis'
"I Go Crazy" yet - considering it had a remarkable
(for 1978) 40-week run on the Hot 100 and was in the
top 40 for 25 weeks, but to see "Southern Cross" rank
ahead of it, when it only peaked at No. 18 and had a
much shorter run is unexpected. I guess we have to
consider these are top 40 radio airplay lists. The
Hot 100 also factored in sales and (IIRC) had AC
stations reporting to it as well, where some of these
songs lingered for quite a while.
Quite an interesting list - can't wait to see more!

Keep in mind that this list is based strictly on Top 40
(CHR) station playlists. "It's Gonna Take A Miracle"
didn't even crack the Top 30 in Radio & Records, although
it did peak at #31 in the Gavin Report. It missed the Top
4000 cutoff by a little over 1,000 points.
I too was quite surprised by some of the results, but
that's part of the fun!

I’m assuming that whatever data you used for WLS in Chicago was
based on the printed list. Before December 1975, only songs they
were playing were listed on their survey. From 12/75 onward, any song
could appear but wasn’t necessarily played.

Yep, going by the printed playlists. And yes, I do realize that these lists didn't
always reflect exactly what was played on the air, but I think (for the most part) they
are fairly accurate (at least the Top 20 or so). Anyway, it's all we really have to go
on now!

ranks lower than Fender's own "Wasted Days And Wasted

You are correct! Makes a little more sense when you learn that "Teardrop" peaked at #13 and
"Wasted" peaked at #12 in Radio & Records (which was based strictly on Top 40 airplay). In fact,
I'd highly suggest the Radio & Records book in following along with the countdown. The rankings
here seem to align more closely with R&R than the Hot 100 (which factored in sales).
As for Freddy Fender, his two big hits fared much better on the Country stations in 1975 (my rankings ONLY looked at Top
40 - CHR stations).

I'm fascinated by the Elvis listings here...that things like "Such A Night" did better than, say, "Don't Cry Daddy." Clearly some of his album cuts could've been big singles at certain points.

Actually, "Don't Cry Daddy" (#2020) did do much better than "Such A Night" (#3154).
Elvis still has 13 more hits in the countdown. He placed 8 songs in the Top 1000 and his
highest comes in at #270. Obviously, most his big hits were from 1956-60. I do plan on
going back to those years eventually (once enough surveys are posted) as I'm interested
to see where those big hits would rank. As for album cuts, I know for a fact that "King
Creole" showed up on a lot of radio station surveys back in 1958, so that would be the
best shot for his album cuts. Again, the big problem with album cuts back then is that
they rarely showed up in the actual numbered surveys as they were often shown as just
"extras", if at all.

Wow, that's a huge project, I'm doing one myself,
digitizing all the Australian Ktel compilations from CD
and digital sources, so I have some idea how much effort
goes into these off side projects. But me being
pedantic I would have to say the best period in top 40
music was 1967 to 1991. The start being the bubble gum
era of the Archies and Tommy Roe, and the definitive
death of pop being Kirk Cobain screaming his lungs out
at the end of 1991 with "Smells like whatever"

As I stated in the intro, my ultimate goal is to cover the years 1955-89. However, there needs to be more surveys from
1955-60 and from 1986-89 to make it feasible. Hopefully it will happen eventually.

I got ambitious and did 3 updates today!
We're now up to the Top 800. Maybe I'll finish by Labor Day?!?
Also, a couple of song notes...
"99 Luftballons" by Nena (#1195) - The ARSA surveys are split almost evenly on the German and English ("99 Red Balloons")
versions. I combined them both as I consider them basically the same. Personally, I prefer the German version.
"We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions" by Queen (#838) - Another judgement call. About 60% of the stations in 1977/78
reported both sides of this record at the same position. Radio & Records also reported it as such. I toyed with the idea
of ranking them separately, but since so many now associate them played together, I decided against it.
