So it seems that I have both stereo versions with the language and the other one bleeped. However, there seems to be no mono CD version of this particular song out on CD. Anyone know an import that possibly has it or somewhere they found it? If so, is it censored like the Stereo version?

Both my mono stock and stereo promo 45s
were censored.

Question:

What was the first issue, commercial or promo, any format, of the unbleeped version?

I don't recall hearing anything but bleeped versions back in the day.

Andrew,

I believe the first issue of the unbleeped and unedited version was
on the 2000 Columbia Legacy CD "At San Quentin (The Complete
1969 Concert)".

The original tv program filmed at the
prison was uncensored.

To Tom Diehl:

So you think the TV program was the same take with the 'sonovabich' line aired on network TV?

I have it on DVD to check for reference,
but who knows where it is... but I believe
so. I do know some of the recordings on
the album (though I don't know which) were
sweetened up or mistakes fixed in the
studio, so it could theoretically be
different.

It is the same take. The USA single and LP are censored,
so was the USA TV broadcast. Bleeped because it was not
allowed to be broadcast in the USA, FCC rules are why. The
original UK Granada Television broadcast of this concert
was uncensored. The uncensored version made it's debut on
the current Columbia/Legacy CD version.

In the event anyone knows, is the mono 45 a dedicated mix
or a fold down? On the 45, whiich I found on YouTube, it
sounds like Johnny is drowning in reverb at the very
beginning while there isn't as much on the CD I have.
Probably my imagination but I thought I'd ask.

It's a dedicated mono mix.
