OK, since there has to be a thread for this since I can't find it, I'll start one anyway. :)

Was there ever an LP version where Parts 1 and 2 were tracked together? Or are they two separate tracks?

Thx!

Doug, there was a thread for this song, but it didn't address your question.

On my "Don't Knock My Love" vinyl LP they are 2 distinct tracks with very little time between tracks.

Like, how little? Within a second or two?

More like .5 sec to 1 sec. Definitely no overlap of sound between the two cuts.

A mere 48 years after this song was released...

I believe that we need an LP/45 designation here. The LP and 45 use different vocal tracks. At 1:32 or 1:33, there's a rat-a-tat snare/horn fill and a vocal yelp. On the LP version, the yelp starts before the fill starts. On the 45 version, the yelp is different, and starts after the fill starts.

LP version

I don't have the LP that "Don't Knock My Love" is from, but apparently, the previous selection has a bongo ending that bleeds into the intro of "Don't Knock My Love". Maybe that makes sense in the context of the album, but outside of that context, no one would want to hear those leftover bongos.

Unfortunately, Atlantic chose to use the bongo-infiltrated intro on the first few CDs on which the song appeared.

That's how it appears on:
  • Atlantic's Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits (1987)
  • Atlantic's Golden Age Of Black Music 1970-1975 (1988) - the GH disc uses the same analog transfer as this but has a slightly shorter fade than this disc
  • Atlantic Rhythm And Blues 1947-1974 Vol. 8 1970-1974 (1991) - digital clone of Golden Age
LP version with a clean intro

It's the LP version minus the bongos from the previous track. MUCH better.

I believe that Rhino unearthed the tapes for this version for the 2-CD Wilson Pickett set A Man And A Half (1992). There's a digital clone on Rhino's Very Best Of (1993).

45 version

The commercial 45 was mono, but the promo 45 was mono/stereo. So the 45 version exists in both mono and stereo. I don't know if the mono is a fold-down or a dedicated mix.

The mono 45 version is on Rhino's Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience box.

The stereo 45 version is on Rhino's Billboard Hot Soul Hits 1971 (1995), with a digital clone on Rhino's Atlantic Ultimate '70s R&B Smashes (1998).

To "Crap"

What are the differences between "LP version with a clean intro" & "Stereo 45 version"?

Thank you!

Andy

Different vocal takes. The mixes are otherwise pretty similar.

Mono side of the promo 45 is not a fold down from the stereo side. Mono side has less reverb on the horns (the sound more up-front), and the female background vocals
are more audible.
