This would require Record Research to first compile
the CB and RW album charts. Considering the RR
research staff is essentially just Paul (who is
already overworked), the chances of that happening is
zero. I believe the the amount of revenue generated by
such a project would be dwarfed by the cost. RR is in
business to survive and I think the market for this
book would be small. Note how they never produced a CB
R&B and C&W book, or a RW R&B book. I'm guessing the
demand for their RW C&W book wasn't that great. Maybe
you could volunteer to be an unpaid intern and do all
the data mining for free! I would even question if RR
even had all these charts - complete issues of Music
Vendor would be problematic.
PS I think this thread is the longest ever for any RR
publication!

Paul,
RE: the 2010 Hot 100 Book, I appreciate that Billboard has made it next to
impossible with their ridiculous and hard-to-guage publishing schedule (AND
the 3 page Hot 100!) but could you maybe just do a CD-Rom or eBook version
to save printing costs (also thus retaining the color) and augment the missing
weeks with excel sheets like you did in the 1990s book?

We still have some time to mull this all over. I'm still concerned with the demand, or more specifically, the lack thereof for the charts from the past decade of music. I think the majority of our customers probably aren't all that interested.

Paul, you're probably right. Most of the generation that listens to 2010's music is probably in their pre-teens, teens and early '20s. They probably don't get newspapers delivered to their front door but read news online. They probably don't buy CDs but mp3s (or more likely just stream them.) So the people that are mostly listening to 2010s music are probably not going to buy a physical book for the decade's charts. Maybe they'd be interested in a digital version.
And I imagine that over the years you've built up a customer base who's mostly interested in '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s music (not everyone, but I do think a large portion of your customer base over the years has been into these decades). And a lot of these people aren't interested in '10s music. That's not to say there aren't some. I know a few people in this chatroom who are, and I'd probably buy the book myself. But having 3 pages per chart (if you handle it that way) including interviews and comments that aren't the chart doesn't seem practical. And then there's all the missing weeks. It seems like if you were going to do this decade, you could create the missing weeks from the data that appeared online each week as the Hot 100 was posted, and also do the same for the printed weeks of Billboard - in other words, type up your own chart for every week of the decade. Yeah, it's a lot more work than xeroxing one page for every week, but that's not an option now.
Also, what's this about having excel sheets for missing weeks of the 1990s book?? I have the Hot 100 1990s Charts book, and didn't even realize there were missing weeks. I know they usually printed 51 charts per year (skipping the last week of the year). Are you saying that if a person bought the digital version instead of the printed, they'd get an extra 10 charts for the Hot 100 Charts of the 1990s "book"?

BTW, I've noticed this for years and never asked about it. This may apply more to people reading these posts on a computer or laptop (vs. a phone). Why do some people's posts go all the way to the right side of the page, and other posts only go about 50-60% of the way to the right? This is probably more a Pat question. I'm sure it has something to do with people having different computers, but still... Is there any way we can control which way our posts appear (e.g. choosing the "Mode" option in the top right corner when we're writing the post, or something else)? Mine always seem to go all the way to the right. Anyway, just curious.

I can answer your last question about message formatting here on the chat board. The posts that go only about 60% of the way are people using Apple computers and Safari. The software that runs this forum is very old, so it's probably some sort of compatibility issue between the software running on Pat's server and Safari. That's why you'll see some of my messages go all the way to the edge of the page like it's supposed to, while others only part of the way (when I'm on my Mac).

been using Google Chrome as my preferred browser for many
years so that may be the reason there.

From 1976-1991, Billboard skipped publishing an issue for the final week of the year. For our chart book series, we simply showed the published note that was printed in the actual magazine. However, starting in 1992, they still compiled a chart for the final week of the year, but didn't publish the magazine. If you check your 1990s chart book for the chart dated January 2, 1993 (and for each year after that), you'll see the excel spreadsheet that we used to create that chart.
One solution we've toyed with for the 3 page Hot 100 is to digitally "cut them up" and paste them together with just the actual chart showing. No matter if we do a print book or an e-book, it's still the same amount of work for us either way.
BTW, our chart books, in order of copies sold is as follows: 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1950s, 1990s, 2000s.

Didn't some of the 1950s Hot 100s spread out over 2 pages?
I think you never did a digital version of the 50s chart… is that why?

The original 1950s chart book only covered 1955-59, so we had more room to play with. The newer 1950s Best Sellers & Hot 100 charts book does have a few Hot 100 charts that take up two pages, but the Best Sellers charts were smaller and we were able to get 2 or 3 on a single page. We were even able to get the (pre-Hot 100) Top 100 sides charts in there, at two per page.
We just haven't gotten around to a digital version yet. Maybe someday.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of most of today's music, but
would still be interested in a '10s Hot 100 book if it
were produced, simply to keep up with the history of the
chart. It's neat to be able to have them all and
quickly look up any week at a glance.
I check the charts online each week, but Billboard's
site is horrible. There's too much on the site, it
takes too long to load, and many times I just give up on
it before I've seen everything I was hoping to see
because it's forever loading. Anyone else have similar
problems?

Billboard.biz - the paid website - is atrocious, and has been for years. Their
chart search function is poor, doesn't present well, fails frequently; their logins
and logouts are inconsistent. Things load slowly. Just a mess.

Paul, congrats on your upcoming RR 26th anniversary! Loved your whole story; it's always great to hear about how the seeds of our lives' passions were planted. The anticipation of riding the bus to the library each time must've been, if you'll pardon the pun, "off the charts."
Didn't know you'd worked at KANO and KDWA. I can get the latter much better since they moved the transmitter site to the Vermillion River flood plain east of downtown Hastings.
I must confess that my eyes did wander from time to time during the video, checking to see if the water cooler in the background was going to gurgle. ;)
