Hi all,
Are we up for a challenge? I thought I would put this out to this board, as it
is here (and BSN) that I would likely get the most answers (some of my
previous posts on the topic have indeed been answered).
In my quest to feature the original 45 label (or picture sleeve) (those that
are the 45 version) and the original LP sleeve (for “LP versions”) for my
iTunes library files, I have actually tried to determine the first stereo LP
appearance for the latter, and not just use an LP with an “e” version. I
believe I have correctly ascertained most of them, using various online
sources such as BSN, Discogs, here, etc., but there are still a few that
elude me. I wonder if anyone here knows on what LP (or CD, if in the CD
era) the first (true) stereo appearance of the following are:

Please, if you are not sure about a source, please indicate so (I am hoping
for verified information, but conjecture is also ok as long as it is indicated
so). Note that my list contains several non-US-but-British hits and some
not-top 40 hits as well. Also, I am not looking for only the first US
appearance in stereo.

First stereo appearance: Soma 1501 reissue 45 (mid '70s) (UPDATE: Not correct, as per Andy's post below.)
1965 Castaways, The - "Liar, Liar"
First stereo appearance: Soma 1469 reissue 45 (mid '70s)
Both tracks simultaneously made their LP debut on the 1965 V.A. comp. The Big Hits Of Mid-America Volume Two (Soma 1246), but this album was issued only in mono.

Did the Soma 1469 stereo reissue 45 of "Liar, Liar" come out before 'Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9'? That LP had the stereo version and I think came out in about 1973.

Andy, Original Sound's mono and stereo versions of Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9 were first released on LP in October, 1968, and I have neither. Aside from a mono cutout of Vol. 1, my sole (1971) purchase in the series issued on LP was the stereo Vol. 6, with its notorious ping-ponged panning of mono tracks, used either to simulate a stereo effect or induce seasickness. Does "Liar, Liar" appear in true stereo on the original 1968 issue of the Vol. 9 LP? (These would have been pressed by Capitol, with "10/68" printed in the lower left corner of the back cover.)
If it does, then that would be its first appearance in true stereo of which I'm aware. Soma's '64-'67 rock roster was relegated to singles-only releases, aside from the two V.A. comps mentioned earlier. The first Soma recording from that period to appear in true stereo was the Del Counts' 1967 Upper Midwest hit, "What Is The Reason," which turned up on the KDWB's 21 All-Time Dream Hits compilation LP on the Hollywood-based Take 6 label in 1968. Being that there were ten other tracks shoehorned onto side 2, the sound quality was predictably poor.

I wish I still had info for some of those that first appeared on early 60's era V/A comps. A friend of mine owned just about all of them but sadly sold them years ago once the songs made it to CD. One example was "Diamonds And Pearls" .. it was a V/A from about 1962 and was also the first appearance of the guitar intro.
I can tell for sure that the following songs never appeared in stereo on vinyl, they were all mixed to stereo in the CD era. I included who created the mix (to the best of my knowledge):
"Melodie D'Amour" "Lazy Mary" (Ron Furmanek, Nipper CD) "Love Potion #9" (45 edit, unsure who made it)
"Nag" (Tom Moulton)
"Yeh Yeh" (Marty Wekser)
"Baby Blue" (Walter DeVenne)
I see two songs in your list that I don't recall hearing in stereo, can you tell me where these appear that way?
Montanas - "You Got To Be Loved"
Velvelettes - "He Was Really Sayin' Something"

I checked my LP library and I own two stereo copies of 'Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9'.
I looked at the back cover; one has 10/68 printed, the other 9/71.
Both have the true stereo "Liar, Liar".

I'm not sure that Marty Wekser mixed Georgie Fame's "Yeh, Yeh".
I believe it first surfaced in approx. 1998 on an import CD (and it might have been a previously suppressed original stereo period piece mix, I'm not sure).
Anyone know for sure?

Re: Yeh Yeh, I will check on that. To my knowledge the first stereo appearance was an early-2000's CD, and I read that Marty mixed it in the BSN forum.

Andy, thanks for confirming that "Liar, Liar" was, indeed, in true stereo on Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9. This could turn into a fascinating "I did not know that!" thread. It already has for me. ;) In the meantime:
1967 Seekers, The - "Morningtown Ride"
The first stereo appearance seems to be on the 1967 Capitol Star Line The Best Of The Seekers LP. My copy shows "stereo" and catalog # ST 2746 on the album jacket, but the record itself (red/white target Star Line label) states "Duophonic" with catalog # DT-2746.
The truth is in the playing: three tracks are in true stereo: "Turn, Turn, Turn," "We're Moving On" and "Morningtown Ride", the latter being the hit 1966 UK/1967 US single version.
Alas, "The Carnival Is Over" and the remaining tracks were all banished to Duophonic City on this LP.

Thought I’d chime in and comment on a few:
Regarding Liar, Liar, I can only imagine being old enough in 1968 (I was 7) to
buy “Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9” and hear the song in stereo for the first
time! I know how it feels to have discovered a first time stereo song in the
late LP/early CD era (one of the first was when Dick Bartley played “(I Can't
Get No) Satisfaction” on his Solid Gold Saturday Night program, and I heard
stereo! I was floored!!). Then came the quest to track it down (which I soon
did).
Anyway, regarding Velvelettes - He Was Really Sayin' Somethin', it is stereo
on 2005 Rhino VA CD "One Kiss Can Lead to Another: Girl Group Sounds
Lost and Found”. As far as I can tell, it is the hit 45.

Andy, you are correct, Andy B. at BSN researched this for
me. The stereo mix did indeed debut in a 1998 Universal
UK Georgie Fame box set, which I'm told is now very rare
and expensive. And yes, it was likely an existing mix in
the vaults that was never issued on vinyl.
The 2003 Universal Jazz CD release was the first time I
was made aware of it.

Bump in honor of Chuck Berry...
Nadine was single only release in 1965. Hence, mono.
But it appears in stereo on a bunch of Chuck Berry comps. Anybody
know where the stereo version came from?

Likely a period mix made then or one of the Steve Hoffman remixes done while at MCA from the Chess Multitracks. "From London to Liverpool" album on Chess from 1965 was true Stereo in the Stereo version and Chuck Berry's first Stereo LP. So, the possibility exists that "Nadine" may have had a period Stereo mix done.
