My copy arrived yesterday. Many thanks to all involved. I never dreamed I'd be hearing these single mixes sounding so good.
Steppenwolf were even more popular in Canada than in the US. "It's Never Too Late", "Who Needs Ya", "Snow Blind Friend", "Ride With Me", and "For Ladies Only" were all Top 40 hits, as was John Kay's "Moonshine". The Sparrows, the group from which Steppenwolf evolved, had four Top 40 hits.
When Canadian radio stations became subject to Canadian content regulations around 1973, there was a lot of confusion as to whether "Born To Be Wild" qualified, since nobody was sure who Mars Bonfire actually was.

Thanks, Paul! I'm glad you're happy with it. Admittedly, I went into the project knowing only their two biggest hits, but I can confidently say that I'm quite impressed at how many really fantastic songs are on the set (both A- and B-sides). I may be biased, but I think the sound quality on several songs is better than any other currently available stereo version on CD.

Of course I bought it too. Another great set! You can
hear the different reverb they used on the vocals on
some of these mixes, like on Born To Be Wild. Nice job!

Upon listening to my copy of "It's Never Too Late" from 16 Greatest Hits, I'm thinking this is an unsuccessful attempt of recreating the 45 version. The
version on ABC/Dunhill runs just a scosche slower, but it's noticeable. I'd like someone else to either corroborate or tell me I'm nuts. (Neither of which
are necessarily mutually exclusive. :) )

That wouldn't actually surprise me, Doug. I haven't compared 16 Greatest Hits to the actual mono 45 mix, but the stereo LP version most definitely runs faster in speed than the mono 45.
I'm glad you love the set!

I was searching for other information on "Born To Be Wild" and found this. (Also just ordered my 2cd set.)
In another thread I read something about a K-Tel CD titled "Biker Rock", so I found one on ebay and bought it. Born To Be Wild is on this K-Tel disc and has an
ending I'm not familiar with. I'm pretty sure I remember almost every version I heard on the radio as having a fade at the end. This one ends cold.
Is this the 45 version? maybe one of those cases where the 45 version is longer than the album version? I haven't checked to see how long my album version actually
runs, but I would assume it may be 3:28 or so? From the fade out point I'm used to hearing, there's an extra 10 seconds of full volume music that ends cold.
I'm going to go look at a few copies I have and find out about the track times, but what's this cold ending I've never heard before?

So, Mr. Hoffman was involved in that series? I have that on CD and Vinyl, but have never really listened to it in detail. (Yeah, I seem to waste a lot of shelf space.)
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to pick up on that missing overdub, if I listen closely. Thanks for the info Andy.

Yes Dave, Steve Hoffman was the
compilation producer on the first ten
volumes. The next ten were lackluster
(uncredited); Steve had left MCA by then.

That's kind of interesting. The version on that CD isn't credited to Hoffman. Instead, it lists it as "Originally Dunhill 4138." Also stereo.
I also received my CD from Real Gone the other day. the difference between these two is like day and night. I've done some looking into my collection for the
album version as well. I suppose that is what I remember the best as neither of these two end in the manner I'm familiar with. Had I not been reading here,
I probably wouldn't have given these difference very much thought. Thanks to all who are posting here.

The original CD release 'Vintage Music Volumes 9 & 10'
does say "Compiled & Remastered by Steve Hoffman" on the
back and in the booklet.
I don't own the later CD reissue simply 'Vintage Music
Volume 9', so I don't know what that says.

I should have written "Track" instead of "CD' in that instance.
The CD does say on the back cover that it was mastered by Steve Hoffman. I was intending to note that the individual track says its source was Dunhill 4138.
I'm going to head down to the local 45 store and see if that one is available. I suppose I could also look over at Discogs as well.

To Dave:
If you want the physical mono 45 for your collection,
head down to your 45 store or Discogs - but it won't
sound as good as the mono version on the 'ABC/Dunhill
Singles' CD! The team did a fine job on this release.

FYI, Cherry Red Records in the UK announced yesterday they are releasing a Steppenwolf 8-CD box set on 10-29-21, "Magic Carpet Ride - The Dunhill / ABC Years 1967-1971". Newly remastered from the original master tapes. Consisting of their 8 albums, plus 26 bonus cuts from rare singles and mono mixes.
Including this time the single (edited) version of Monster, which was not included on the Real Gone "The ABC/Dunhill Singles" CD release.
Rock on !!

While I was at the 45 shop, I picked up a copy of Monster. I haven't listened to it yet but assume the editing will be hard to bear. Dunhill 45-D-4221.
Included on the back is the single "Berry Rdes Again."
Another great song that shouldn't have been released as a 45 IMHO. Also Chicago "Dialogue."
