Okay, so the original parent album of this top 40 hit from 1988 was the O.S.T. for School Daze (EMI Manhattan 48680 and 19970), and yes, Pat already has both versions listed in the on-line database. The soundtrack was released in March of '88, while the single (EMI-Manhattan 50115) hit #1 r&b in Billboard in the April 23 issue, and the following month, peaked at #35 pop for three weeks, starting in the May 21 issue...

I want to point out that - in a situation similar to what happened w/ James Brown and "Living in America" in 1986 - when E.U. released its next studio album following the School Daze soundtrack, it featured a previously-unreleased version of "Da'Butt", and that album/version is NOT currently listed in the db. The album, titled Livin' Large, was released in March of '89 on Virgin 91021, where the song was re-titled "Da Butt '89" (track 8). I have the CD myself, and if Pat wishes to add it immediately, I can report that "Da Butt '89" has an actual time of (5:26). At this time, I don't know if the more accurate descriptor would be "(remixed)" or "(rerecording)"; it definitely doesn't match either the (3:53) 45 version or the (5:11) O.S.T. School Daze version. For those who haven't heard it - and wish to help make a determination - here's the (5:26) version in question on YouTube: E.U. - "Da Butt '89"

Promo CD DPRO 04066 has 3 tracks:

1-7" Edit 3:54 listed; 3:53 actual
2-Extended Radio Mix 6:20 listed; 5:08 actual
3-B-Boy Dub 5:23 listed and actual

Cut 2 timing is not a typo.

I have "Da' Butt" in what I assume is the 7" Edit on two different Various Artists compilations, and they both seem to have a dropout at the 1:33 mark on the words "Sing It". I'm wondering if anyone here who has this promo can see if the same dropout exists on there at the same point in the song. Also, is it possible that Track 2 on the promo listed above is actually the soundtrack album version, rather than an "Extended Radio Mix"? According to Discogs, the version on the "School Daze" soundtrack runs 5:11, which would be in the same area as the actual running time of Track 2 of the promo.

The vinyl 12" single has the REAL 'Extended Radio Mix' which is the unedited mix of the '7' Edit'.

I'm wondering if this actually made it to a CD? It's my favorite version.

My Canadian 45 has the same dropout, so it is most likely on the master. I don't have a U.S. 45.

Andy,

Assuming the listed running time is correct on the actual CD, it would appear to be available here:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Capitol-Collectables-2/maste r/110537

By the way, something seems to keep preventing me from fixing this link. There really is no separation of the letters e and r in "master" in the link, but every time I try to fix it, the link still shows up the same. Copy and paste the link and put the word "master" together and the link should work.

Paul C - thanks for that information. If it's on the original 45 from 1988, you're probably right that's it's on the master tape.

Dan, My U.S. 45 RPM vinyl single, EMI/Manhattan 50115 also has the same audio anomaly at 1:31. Looking at my notes from 1988, I called it a 'Bad Edit'. I don't have it on a CD to compare, but there is a smaller one at :56.2. -Bill.

To TheCDGuy:

Thanks for the lead

Interesting that it's only available on a UK CD!

Andy & TheCDGuy:

I can confirm that “Da Butt” runs 6:21 and some change on the ‘Capitol
Collectables 2’ CD, with dead space taking the track time out to 6:24.
Hope this info. helps!

Just an aside, but something that brought me quite a lot
of joy was hearing Casey Kasem saying "Da Butt" whenever
it was featured on the AT40 countdown.

Thanks! I'll put that CD in my Wantlist on Discogs to buy later.

LOL, I used to chuckle at that too, until I heard that infamous recording of him getting mad about a long distance dedication on the 9/14/85 show. Hearing him say "Da Butt" now seems extremely tame by comparison.

Oh yes, his outtakes are marvelously hysterical. It's
actually kind of cool to know that a pro like him
didn't always get it right the first time.

I wanted to circle back around to this after listening to Track 2 ("Extended Radio Mix") from the promo CD single today. From all indications, this mix is not the School Daze soundtrack
version. It is also neither a shorter version of the 6:20 "Radio Mix" discussed above nor a simple extended version of the familiar "Radio Edit". It seems to be a unique mix, an odd duck indeed, and in
doing some light research on Discogs, Youtube, etc., it doesn't seem likely that this version even made it to a corresponding vinyl release. Per Youtube, the "Extended Soundtrack Version / Marcus Miller
Mix" found on the commercial 12" that runs about 5:09 seems to be the same as the School Daze album mix (i.e. it sounds like a longer edit of the familiar radio version), so we don't seem
to be dealing with a mix that was named differently on the two formats but present on both.

Perhaps the "Extended Radio Mix" on the promo CD is a leftover remnant of a previous mixing session that was originally intended for release before the Marcus Miller "hit" mix became the preferred
version, and so the version that the "Extended" in its title refers to is MIA, having been replaced by a Radio Edit of the soundtrack mix. It's all quite confusing.

But, to be clear: no, it does not appear that Track 2 from the promo single is the familiar soundtrack version.

*Another possibility: I see the commercial 45 came with a mix called "Dub 1" on the B-side, listed 3:57. The weird "Extended Radio Mix" on the promo CD could be a longer edit of
that dub mix, although I don't have the 45 to check and see. Just throwing another idea onto the pile.

No, Dub 1 is an edit of the B-Boy dub. I recreated Dub 1
using the B-Boy Dub a few years ago.
