Latest update to include 1997.
The multiple versions for each song are starting to wear me down; there are nearly 1000 tracks included on the list.
I denoted the version that's used on Top Hits USA's promo discs to be the "hit version".

Incredible stuff. Really. I have spent hours going through just a few of the
years and trying to figure out what I have as regards to single edits, etc. For
the 45 edits, I can't believe how many just in a quick glance in some of the
years might not be on CD yet.
Is there any way to export your lists out as a Excel file or whatever to make it
easier to find a particular artist or song in a year?
Thanks again for all the work you and the contributors put into this.

Happy to share, Pat.
There's no way any one person could possibly have gone through all this source material alone. I attempted to do this alone before I met the guys here on the board, but there were too many holes in my collection, and too many versions that I was completely unaware of.
I think the 1996-and-later years are still missing a ton of CD single versions, just because those CD singles are the only places to find them, and none of us has the 400+ CD singles that charted every year.
Point being: If I can save you a little work downstream, I'm happy to do so. I'm eternally grateful for the good people on this board, and more than happy to give back when I can.
As for searching through the list, try CTRL-F to find what you're looking for. That works very nicely for web pages and HTML files. The Mp3tag program also exports to .csv and possibly Excel formats, but I haven't really needed them thus far.

Thanks for the info. Never knew about the OPTION-F (Mac) on a web page. I
was also able to copy the text and get into something I can view by Artist,
etc.
My main collecting stops around 1992 or so. I have a hundred or so CD
Singles from the mid 90's that I have never listened to, not my type of music.
Was bought as part of a bigger collection. If I can help plug some holes I will.
I have thousands of 45's, many new-old-stock, but have been on a kick
trying to collect CD singles as of late.

Ron knows how much I love this invaluable resource he's put together. I understand what a chore the 1990s stuff must be, but I hope you'll continue forward. Of course, I also hope you'll keep going backwards thru the 1970s (at least there's not so many different versions to deal with).
I did notice that you don't have the promo version of "Swayin' To The Music (Slow Dancin')" by Johnny Rivers from 1977 listed. I've never been able to track down a digital version of the promo single. I understand there's a somewhat clumsy edit on that one, but I'd still like to have it.

Paul, just to clarify: it's only the original Soul City 008 promo 45 - titled "Slow Dancin'" - that has the edited mono side. The reissue on Big Tree 16094 - titled "Swayin' To The Music (Slow Dancin')" - contains the unedited version on both sides of the mono/stereo DJ 45, as well as the stock 45. Since the record didn't chart on the Hot 100 until Big Tree picked it up, one could argue that the initial Soul City mono edit wasn't the "hit." I won't, but some may.
I should also add (and it was my "clunky edit" comment back in the Stone Age on the "Swayin' To The Music" thread) that it isn't that the second edit, near the end of the record, is all that clunky; it's just that it would have sounded less obvious, had that edit been made a mere 2.5 seconds later.
Paul, had you ridden your bike down to Heilicher Brothers back in 1977, I would have been more than happy to have handed you a copy of the Soul City 008 promo 45. What kept you? ;)

One more year completed - 1998
Chuck M. did most of the work assembling the tracks for this one. I just tidied up the filenames and
tags.
As always, please let me know if you find any omissions or errors.
The late '90s are deeply unenjoyable for me. I'd given up on pop radio about this time, and don't
have much of a personal connection to most of these songs. Assembling the 1998 library is made much
more unpleasant due to the promo CD singles including pointless multiple versions of every song. At
the time, Top Hits USA listed what version of song they used, but they would frequently add silence at
the end or hasten the fade. I wasn't patient enough to do side-by-side comparisons for many of these,
and it's very possible that the Top Hits USA version matches one of the others on the list. I used
the designation of "hit version" to indicate which version Top Hits USA used.
I will hack my way through 1999, then go back to the '70s.

I've been slowly trying to replace the Top Hits files I
have from 1994-2004. The earlier fades and 'tones'
placed at the end of files were very annoying to me.
Thank goodness I came across the ability to subscribe to
PrimeCuts in early 2005 from (then TM Century.) No early
fades and no tones!

Yeah, virtually everyone else was a better choice than Top Hits USA for sound quality: Hot Hits, Spotlight On Hits, Promo Only, TM Century, Hitmakers, Network 40... None of those other discs have any early fades, or cue tones.
(All the Top Hits USA discs have an inaudible 20 KHz tone in the left channel at the end of the song. Those tones were originally set up to trigger an automation system, which is kinda neat, but mostly annoying.)

1976 was far more interesting than 1998.
There were charted singles called "Let 'Em In" (Wings), "Let Her In" (John Travolta), and "Let Me In" (Derringer).
There were three songs that were hits only after a non-hit 45 mix flopped: "Love To Love You Baby" (Donna Summer), "I'll Be Good To You" (Brothers Johnson), and "Dream On" (Aerosmith).
There were two songs that each charted twice, with two different recordings by the same artist: "Ode To Billie Joe" (Bobbie Gentry) and "Roxy Roller" (Sweeney Todd, with two different lead singers on the chart entries!)
There were four songs that charted for multiple artists: "Heart On My Sleeve" (Gallagher And Lyle, Bryan Ferry), "Love Hangover" (Diana Ross, Fifth Dimension), "Save Your Kisses For Me" (Brotherhood Of Man, Bobby Vinton), and "You To Me Are Everything" (Real Thing, Broadway, Revelation - three versions!).
There were charted singles from older Motown acts: the Miracles ("Love Machine"), the Supremes ("I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking" and "You're My Driving Wheel") and the Temptations ("Up The Creek (Without A Paddle)").
There were even two songs with months in the title: "January" (Pilot) and "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)" (Four Seasons).
Throw in a bunch of novelty songs and instrumentals, and you've got a pretty solid year! Yay, 1976!

I never noticed that. I have a bunch of those from the
mid-ish 90s, I'll have to check it out.
I was working at a station in late '93-early '94, and I
remember the discs we used would increment the index #
at what would be a segue and cut points. Must have
been for CD jukeboxes, I've never seen a manual deck
that utilized that. It was either TM HitDiscs or the
Jones equivalent (we used a combination of the two
services).

Yikes! I scanned thru this page and am amazed at how
many of these songs I'm completely unfamilar with. And
I was music director/PM drive jock on a CHR at the
time!! Granted, we were a very pop/rock CHR...we
played very little rhythmic/urban stuff, and most of
what we did play was dayparted to nights, even that was
often
edited.

I really started getting into Top 40 radio in 1974 (at the tender age of 8)! My twin brothers are 6 years older than me, so I got a good head start. In September of 1974, me and my one older brother started keeping track of AT40 every week and by 1975 we started keeping our own stats. So, my "sweet spot" for Pop music really began in earnest in 1975. If you loved 1976, I think you'll also dig 1975...lots of great variety from some great artists.

I was intrigued to find in the 1976 list, the amount of
lower charting songs that had 45 versions that I was
unaware of. I'll have to ask you the differenes in songs
like "Dog Eat Dog" from Ted Nugent and others.
