i just wanted to share a milestone with all my top 40
loving brethren....
today the first part of my quest has been completed.....
i bought and received the last commercial 45 that i
needed for my collection......i now have every top 40
song in it's single format from 1955 to 2000......45's
from 1955 to 1989, cassette singles from 1990 to 1996,
and promo or commercial cd singles from 1996 to
2000......in addition, as most of you know, i'm working
my way through the 10,000 plus songs that made the top 40
during that period closely comparing the cd versions i
have versus the singles i have......i am currently about
70% completed on that front......
if anyone needs a commercial top 40 song in it's original
format for research purposes, please send me a private
message
or email and i will send it out in a timely manner...
i appreciate everyone's help in my personal quest to have
every top 40 song in it's single form.

This is amazing. I can only imagine how much work and money that took. Congrats, man! And thanks for sharing your knowledge and information with us.
What was the last 45 that you needed to complete your collection?

Ed, what was the *very* last single you acquired in your quest? (I see
another poster just beat me to the question, by 3 minutes!) Just curious.
For those of us here who are also "completion-ists", our personal projects
often involve just *so* many total titles, it sometimes seems that we'll
never complete it. But you got there! You must have a deep sense of
personal satisfaction. Congratulations, sir! And thanks to you as well, for
the tremendous amount of info you've shared with us here. When Todd
Ireland first mentioned Pat's board to you, way back when, who knew what
the consequences would be for all of us, almost a decade later! You are
*truly* one of a kind, buddy! This board would be lost without you.
Ed, I have just one question: Now that you've finished up with this, what
are your neighbors on Long Island gonna do, to try to keep you off the
streets! How 'bout a bowling league? Or fantasy baseball? :)

Congrats! And wow, it's hard to believe, as Jim points out, it's been "almost a decade" that this board's been up. But I checked the stats, and it was mid-October 2004 that many of us first joined the site. That's 8 1/2 years ago, and it doesn't even feel that long!

thanks, everyone for the kind words.....it's been almost 15
years in the making to get every top 40 vinyl
45.....cost?....i don't want to think about it!!!....the
last 45 i found, ironically enough, was 'giving up' by
gladys knight & the pips as maxx 326.....just bought it
this week and received it today.....as far as keeping
busy.....i'm still only 70% complete on task number two,
which is getting every top 40 song in digital form on
cd......that may require a bit more work that getting the
vinyl 45's......thank you all for the help and support....

How ironic - you were awarded for not giving up by getting "Giving Up"! (If you ever decide to collect all top 100 hits, perhaps your last 45 can be T. G. Shepard's "Finally!" :)

Congratulations, Ed--that is an awesome accomplishment! It gives me hope that someday, I may reach my personal goal--to collect on CD or vinyl, every song that ever charted on my favorite childhood radio station--99 1/2 WLOL in Minneapolis (hence, my username). Fortunately, my window is much smaller than yours 1981-1991. I have about 1600 songs down with around 500-600 to go. Of course, I'll never be able to determine the "correct" version for many, as 'LOL played a pretty good mix of LP and 45 versions, with a few custom edits mixed in just to make things even more challenging! I'm curious, has anyone else here worked on a station-specific collection?

About 10-12 years ago, I crossed paths with a collector
who assembled a WABC-specific collection. I think it was
in mp4 format, and fit on one data DVD-R. I may have a
copy somewhere, but it would be deeply buried in the
basement.
Where do you get your WLOL chart info? Is it posted
online somewhere? (I'm sure you have plenty of WLOL
airchecks, but if you want to browse, go to archive.org,
and search on WLOL in "All Media Types". I uploaded a
bunch from my own collection and from listeners.)
I'd been hoping someone would assemble such a collection
for WLIR/New York, or for short-lived KJ104/Minneapolis
or REV105/Minneapolis. Actually, it would be fascinating
to see what Z100 or WPLJ played from the 1983-and-onward
years - does anyone know of chart archives for those
stations?

From 1986 through 1991, I referenced the "Power Playlists" section of Billboard magazine (Southdale Library has it on microfilm). Finally, I got 1982 through 1984 playlists from a good friend of Crap From The Past--Mr. Jay Philpott.

Sure beats stamp collecting, doesn't it, ed? Congrats on counting 'em all down, so to speak!
I just listened to a radio-specific countdown a week ago on bobbymagicradio of every song to chart on the WCFL/Chicago survey during its top-40 era from 1965-76. It was six days of one "oh, wow!" after another, and a reminder that Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul top-40 radio sometimes sounded much further apart than the 400 miles separating them (although the same could probably be said for 'CFL and WLS, too.)
My own station-specific quest is to round up as many records as possible from my college radio days at the University Of Minnesota's student-run station during the 1970s. The main emphasis is on the records that attained at least some degree of consensus among the station's on-air staffers, and most of those have already been archived. There are still a few holes, though: station surveys for much of 1971 are still MIA, and trying to rely on forty-year-old memories to bridge the gaps is something of a challenge.
One of the most interesting aspects of the project was discovering how many of the obscure records we aired have since gone on become classics in Northern Soul circles. Kinda makes me shudder about what I might've tossed into the reject pile!
A concurrent goal is to round up as many station alumni as possible and hold a "Name That Tune" contest at the local Museum Of Broadcasting. There's nothing quite like a big room full of people pulling their hair out trying to recall the names or artists of songs they haven't heard in 40 years. Should be doubly fun for the "Name That Label" round ("Oh! I know! It's... um... the color was white...uh....) As were most of them, being promo copies. :)

Congratulations, Ed! That's quite an achievement, and I'm happy for
you (and jealous)! Personally, I'm hoping to someday have all of the 45
versions of the Top 40 hits from 1955-1983, whether it be on 45 rpm or
cd. However, that's a longggggg ways off yet. I can only guess at the
time and effort it took you. Wow!
Thanks, too, for being an excellent resource on this board. Actually,
because of you I have had to add numerous songs on my want list that
I thought I had in the correct version (But, of course, I mean that in a
good way)! I must say that it's extremely helpful to me that you give
details and oftentimes make it easy to adjust speeds so I can easily
remedy many songs.
