I raised the question in another thread about unique edits/mixes that
appeared only on promo 12" singles in the '70s and '80s. Since this
board and Pat's database has thoroughly documented just about every
promo edit/mix that appeared on 45s, I thought there may be a handful
of additional "DJ versions" which were only serviced on 12" singles.

Sounds like it would be quite a project to sort out the 12" mixes that were only available on promo copies. There was a time, particularly in the early-mid 80s where it seemed almost every song had a unique 12" mix.

Yes, but most of them would have also been available on a commercial 12" single, too, right?

I remember another one:
Kool & The Gang - Let's Go Dancing (Ooh La La La) (ReMix)
the commercial 12" contained the 6:39 LP version. This
promo came out shortly after, and was remixed in a
shorter version (4:48) that removed a verse, and instead
contained a synth solo not in the original version, and a
chorus breakdown that built up again to the end chorus
then faded. Our dance station switched over to this
version for airplay. I found the promo 12", but no
commercial issue existed to my knowledge.
It did make it to CD tho, it was included in one of the
"Dance Classics" volumes from Unidisc.

Also, doesn't the 12" promo of John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over have several extra seconds tacked on the end that are available no where else?

Barry White had a White Label promo called "20th Century Presents For Disco DJ's Only" (Special Mix For Disco Play) Barry White's Greatest Hits.
Here is the tracklist:
Side A
1. Standing in the Shadows of Love (5:20)
2. I`m Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby (7:12)
3. Never, Never Gonna Give You Up (7:47)
Side B
1. Honey Please Can't You See
2. Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe

I know that "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" and "You're The First The Last My Everything" are definitely different mixes or different takes.
If anyone is interested in hearing this, let me know and I can send over a copy.

I know I've heard an alt vocal version of "You're the First, the Last..." on the radio. I even inquired about here but I don't think I got any answers. I'd be curious to hear the version you have - because I always wondered about this strange version that would sometimes be on the radio, and I never knew where it came from.

In the post at the top, Aaron mentions the 12" version of Bob Welch "Precious Love". This song has always been my favorite of Bob Welch's and this version sounds intriguing (I didn't even know about it until Aaron's mention.) Since then the 12" version has not shown up on ebay, amazon or even YouTube. So I did some research tonight - and found 2 different "extended versions". Not sure if both are legit. According to these 2 pages on discogs.com

the extended version clocks in at 6:07 - on both the US and Canadian versions of the 12". (BTW, there should not be a space before the last 2 digits of these links - no space before the 51 or 89. No matter what I do here, it puts in a space, so if anyone's going to try to go to those 2 links, please first remove the space near the end of the links.)

it's a longer version clocking in at 8:23.
There are a few scenarios. The 6:07 time could be a misprint and it's really 8:23. This 8:23 version was somehow done by a fan years later. (I've seen that happen on Youtube all the time!) But the two webpages where you can actually hear this 8:23 version refer to it as the "1979 remix" and the "1979 Disco Purrfection Version" - which makes me think this 8:23 version really was done in 1979. Maybe there were 2 extended versions made in 1979 - 6:07 and 8:23??
Can anyone shed any light on this? Does anyone have either version on vinyl, which would certainly be proof of what version(s) were released in 1979?
Too bad this hasn't been released on CD. Hopefully, some day Universal will do so. (And has anyone here done a clean vinyl transfer of the extended version(s) to digital?)

My promo 12" single of Bob Welch's "Precious Love" (SPRO-9094) has the
exact same, listed (6:07), actual (6:02) version on both sides of it. The
deadwax information is also identical on both sides: "SPRO-9094 F1".

The "bells" segment turned up at about the mid-point of my promo 12"
single, Aaron, so I'm now able to identify the original audio source for them.

Thanks Jim. Now we know the 6:02 version is a legit release from 1979, and I will certainly try to seek this 12" out. The only question that remains is this 8:23 version, which can be heared at the 2 website links I listed above - they are referred to as a "1979 remix" and a "1979 version" - but was it a legit release and actually released in 1979? Perhaps there were two 12" records released in 1979. I also wonder if they are based on the same mix (which is kind of doubtful) or completely different mixes / remixers.

Two more to add to this list:
"Abracadabra" by Steve Miller Band
It was pointed out in another thread that this is a 4:37 edit of the LP version, which removes one of the verses and also edits out a good chunk of the instrumental ending.
"It's Only Love" (Live Version - Remixed by Bob Clearmountain) by Bryan Adams & Tina Turner
I don't think this remix of the live version has appeared anywhere else.

As far as I have researched, these mixes are only
available on the above mentioned double promo 12"
single. The only US commercial 12" I have found 0-
96107 features just Steve "Silk" Hurley mixes.
Some of the remaining tracks on DMD 1687 are available
on promo CD PRCD 4098.

In the US, the long 4:40 version of "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" by U2 only appears on a promo 12" single. It does, however, appear on commercial 12" singles in other countries.
