My commercial 45, confirmed as MGM 13127, has a listed time of (2:40) and
an actual time of (2:42). I only post this info because just about every current
database CD that includes this song runs just (2:38).

the reason the timings are off is because the 45 is pitched
slower than the cd versions....if you pitch down the 2:38
cd version to run 2:42 you'll be able to effectively re-
create the vinyl 45 version...

Actually, the 45 may be a different lead vocal! I just came across
this post, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx-YaPr_EV8, where
he claims it is.
Anyone can confirm? ed, do you have the 45? I can tell the
different vocal right away. My version on 1986 Polydor CD "The
Very Best Of Connie Francis" seems to be a mono version of the
stereo.
So, we might have another missing 45 version on CD!

Wow, that is definitely a different vocal. Hard to believe this has gone
unnoticed.... i believe this song has one of connie's finest performances
and while i feel that the version contained on all cd's is slightly superior,
this "single version" would be the "correct" version......if that is what's
actually on the 45.

Thanks for unearthing this David. Yes, the 45 is a different vocal take and unfortunately the 45 vocal take does not appear on any cd's in the database.

Indeed. Unique to the 45 RPM single. And continued to the
MGM Gold label Gold Circle 45 at least (the pressing I
own).

a future compilation.

More like Real Gone should do a mono singles comp for Connie! And they could have a run of autographed copies, since she's still with us.
According to the Wikipedia entry for this song, it's not only a different take but a different recording session and different orchestra:

The second recording of the "Follow the Boys" theme song was conducted by LeRoy Holmes, a veteran of the classic MGM musicals who by 1963 had left that studio to compose for United Artists films; however he returned to MGM to work with Francis whose 1958 hit "Stupid Cupid" he'd conducted. The recording took place on September 27, 1962. This version was released on the original MGM Records Single.
The third recording was recorded on January 10, 1963. This version used the original September 1962 playback with Francis overdubbing new vocals. This version was released on the album "Follow the Boys" (MGM Records SE-4123), which featured the film's songs on the A-Side and a selection of Italian-flavored songs to fit the movie's setting on the B-Side although they didn't appear in the actual movie. |

So I'm presuming the common version (in stereo and mono) is the soundtrack album version.
That makes at least four big Connie Francis hits that have at least partial difference in the vocals on the 45s:
- Second Hand Love (added harmony vocal)
- Together (different spoken take)
- My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own (some pressings have different vocal take)
- Follow the Boys (45 has different vocal take)

I've posted before about "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own" but it's not just a different vocal take, my 45 has a key change after the bridge that goes up a half step that's not on the common version, so it's a different arrangement to some extent as well. This was my mother's 45 from back in the day that I grew up hearing so this song has never sounded right to me hearing it on other releases in the reissue era.

The differences in the LP version are added instruments, and a different mix. The LP version added an extra guitar and woodwinds.
When they remixed it for the stereo they bounced the original vocal into a new track and as a result it sounds hollow and weird in the LP version, but same take.

Hmm, I don't know... according to the Bear Family
Connie Francis box:
"Several takes from these sessions are still extant.
The original MGM K 12923 single utilized Take 49
(recorded July 31, 1960) but two weeks into release
this was replaced by Take 37 (recorded July 25, 1960)
at the behest of Francis and the song's writers."
The Bear Family box does contain take 37, but the
sound quality is awful... it's super distorted. Not
sure if it's a disc dub or a faulty tape source.
The good news is that "Second Hand Love" and
"Together" are both on the Bear Family box in their
mono single mixes, in very good sound. "Follow the
Boys" does not appear at all.

"follow the boys" was scheduled to be included on the third bear family
set, but it was canceled due to low sales apparently...too bad because
there is plenty of connie's stuff waiting to be released in the digital
age...

This is my 45 of "My Heart..." Deadwax is 60-XY-125-1, MGM K12923. As I say it's a completely different version after the bridge. This was a dub I did many years ago and I think the declicking of the the time destroyed the pick bass sound in the arrangement, so before it's pointed out I know that there's (unfortunately) too much noise reduction here, I've just never taken time to do it again all these years later.

Very, VERY interesting! It's not just different after
the bridge, Vanmeter, it's a completely different take
from start to finish.
BUT... that is NOT take 37. That sounds to my ears to
be take 23, which is also on the Bear Family box, and
in much better sound than take 37! I need to listen
further, but my initial impression is that that's take
23.
And this is an American pressing of "My Heart Has a
Mind of It's Own," correct?

Yes, my 45s are boxed up but I can dig for it in a day or two just to remove any doubt - but it is a standard, black label early '60s US pressing - the matrix info in the dead wax is listed above, and it's the same catalog number as the "regular" version. My mother was a fan and this came out her senior year of HS so all I can figure it she must've bought it when it was brand new and got a different version that was replaced/pulled quickly. As I say I never never heard this take anywhere else (I don't have the BF box).

Thanks for the discovery, David. The Collectables 45 of "Follow The Boys", issued in 1986, is the LP version in stereo. So it looks like the MGM Gold Circle reissue 45 may well have been the last time the 45 version was issued. I don't know when the MGM reissue 45 would have gone out of print, but likely not later than the early 1970s.
