what's the story with this one? I have read, although I can not remember
where (I searched this site but came up nil), that Cher's vocal is a different
take on this track between the 45 and LP version. Is this the difference? I
downloaded a version that says "single version" from a site, however it
sounds like the same vocal to me.

The difference is apparent in the way Cher sings the opening "you better sit down kids" line, particularly on the "bet-" and "sit" syllables.

On the 45, "you", "-ter" "sit" and "down" are all sung at the same pitch, with "bet-" sung higher.

On the LP, the "bet-" is sung at an even higher pitch than on the 45, as is the word "sit." "Down" is also pitched higher than the same syllable on the 45.

It's the word "sit" that really sticks out. The bold syllables below are the ones sung at the highest pitch:

45: You bet-ter sit down kids

LP: You bet-ter sit down kids

The 45 version is on this YouTube clip, with the vocal beginning around the 1:20 point.

thanks so much, Yah Shure. Not having the single, without the YouTube
clip, I wouldn't have been able to hear this. The source I used, from a
reputable source at that, although labeled as the 45 version, is obviously
NOT!

This may be another 45 version that has a subtle difference vs. the LP version. According to the database the 45 version has yet to be on a domestic CD release.

Prompted by this thread I compared a needledrop of the Imperial 45 with the stereo LP version from CD. Syncing the two in multitrack there's no doubt they used different vocal takes. I'm not sure which take I prefer, but what I am sure about is that a much better job was done on the mono mix. I thought the stereo mix was fine until I had a fresh listen to the 45! The 45 sounds like a hit record. By comparison I think the stereo mix sounds like a so-so album cut.
