This information is fascinating. Aaron, thanks for posting the original rap that was stolen for that song. That's unbelievable - but I guess they weren't above stealing for the parts of other records too, right? And the Hard Core Remix is really odd to not have any of Martha's vocals until the fade. Wow.

I know I'm joining the party a little late here, but for what it's worth I've never once heard the single version (a.k.a. "Radio Mix") of "Strike It Up" on the radio. As a matter of fact, I remember being bewildered the first time I'd ever heard the single version because it was missing the familiar aforementioned pulsating "synthe-sax" intro with the "Yeah!" and "Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance!" chants. (In my opinion, this is what truly makes the song!) I remember Armed Forces Radio playing what sounded like an edit of the LP version, though I don't readily recall which set of rap verses were featured.

Radio Edit.

There's a music video on YouTube posted within the past few months which has a different edit of the "Original Remix" than what's on the US promo CD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv6ypA3EXGw

This one has a long intro and the "hit" rap verse, yet it only runs about 3:23. Could this be what some stations played?

Just today, I ordered a copy of the German CD single, which has a 3:30 Radio Edit as the lead track. Perhaps this import CD has the version that matches the YouTube video. I'll post my findings when it arrives.

Well, to my surprise and disappointment, the Radio Edit on the German CD single contains an edit of the LP version (not the correct rap).

I agree the 3:06 never got played in New York City. The Original Remix Radio Edit 3:31 and the chants are the reason why it was a top 10 hit as well as the intro. I am always amazed when the CD single version never matches the one radio played (Same situation with Back To Life (However Do You Want It) where the 3:30 single pales in comparison to the 3:48 mix that everyone knows and loves. Radio playing 30 seconds of acapella? Makes sense they took the 3:48.)

What version would this be? Sounds like an edit of the Dance Mix.

The version with the original rap appeared on a US promo single CD of the
song. It's track 3 and was done by a guy named Oscar Pabon. Since they didn't
get permission to use his rap that they stole, they replaced it with a rapper
names Stepz and that's what appears on the majority of the mixes.

That's the version I've been trying to track down on CD since 2012! I suppose that could be considered the video edit.

The Original Remix Radio Edit from the promo CD is the same mix, but it's edited differently. The main difference is that that "yeah" chant starts right away, whereas the video doesn't have any vocals until 0:26. There are also some slight editing differences toward the end, too.

I prefer the video edit over this one. I wonder why the video edit version was
never released on CD?

I also think the video edit is better, and I'm wondering if it was released on CD. There have been a few claims of people hearing this version on the radio back in '91, but I just can't find a disc that actually contains this mix.

Was just listening to SiriusXM radio and they played the Original Remix Radio
Edit version. The yeah yeah chant started at the very beginning.

Something always sounded wrong when I heard the "original remix radio edit" as a recurrent.   Even though it was an officially serviced version on the promo CD, I know the video edit was the
version I heard on the radio years before.   Anyone know where this video edit originates?

I'll give you a dollar if you can figure it out, Dave! I've hunted for this
edit on CD numerous times and can't find it. I do not, however, own all
of the various import configurations.

I will have to take a closer look at discogs etc to see if we can find it as well as other sources. For all Aaron has done for us board members, its time to help him solve the great mystery of where this is on CD (or as close to it as possible if available at all digitally).

You say its known as "video edit"? Maybe its known by another track/remix/edit name, which is why we can't find it. Just a thought

I agree with everyone this is the ONLY version I have ever heard officially on the radio (KTU played this version in the 90's). Remember everyone that the CD single of Soul II Soul's However Do You Want Me in 1989 had a very similar situation. The CD single never got played because it started with 30 seconds of acapella and wasnt radio friendly. Instead the 3:48 radio version is the one we all know and love, the one that got released in the UK and the rest of the world. No one considers the 3:30 anything other than a nice novelty. Same situation here, the single CD version was not played.

Todd has it correct, the Yea and Dance, Dance, Dance are what make this version awesome and the reason it went top 10 in the first place!

It's simply an edit of this, no?

Youtube version runs 3:24.

Here is what seems most likely to be a match. This version has a radio edit that times in at 3:30.

https://www.discogs.com/Black-Box-Strike-It-Up/release/20920 5

Another possibility that its called the Dance Radio Edit which times in at 3:29. Would have to be dubbed off a 12 inch vinyl possibly.

https://www.discogs.com/strike-it-up/release/1116793

There's a 3:27 on a French CD comp that might have it called La Mega Dance Party.

https://www.discogs.com/la-mega-dance-party-vol-1/release/47 3265

Based on the video time stamp of 1991, I would venture a guess its on the 12 inch vinyl and its called "Dance Radio Edit" which makes sense.

If anyone on the board has the CD promo or the vinyl, feel free to chime in.

It's not the Original Remix Radio Edit because that appears on the cassette
single and the yeah yeah part starts the song instead of the instrumental.

I know read above, its the Dance Edit on the 12 inch vinyl, it matches the time. The sensitive edit and original remix radio edit are entirely different mixes. I think you were confusing the Original Remix Radio Edit, with the import 1991 single which just says "Radio Edit." Hope that clarifies that both edits (Dance Radio Edit and Radio Edit) in the previous posts links appear to be different ones than the US got.
