Abagon informs me that the actual commercial run time of Roxette's "Dressed for Success" is 3:45, not 4:19 as printed on the record label. The 45 label also states "Single Version".

here's a good one.....my commercial cassingle issued as emi 50204 does not state a version or run time on the cassingle or sleeve but it is the full length lp version running 4:11.....even though the import of the cd below states "us single mix"

(S) (4:10) Edel 18205 Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus - Greatest Hits (LP length)

i just reviewed the version from "look sharp" to the cassingle and the "look sharp" version runs a second or 2 shorter than my cassingle (4:09 vrs 4:11).....so the cassingles' real run time is 4:11

my commercial 45 with the same label and catalog number, emi 50204, states on the label the version as "single version" with NO listed run time but it runs 3:45 and is just an early fade of the full length cd/lp version which runs 4:11....

note--the commercial 45 was NOT originally issued with a picture sleeve....

so here is one of those examles in which the single format had differing versions with the same catalog number....

I've noticed all commercial single copies of Roxette's "Dressed for Success" indicate the song was remixed by Chris Lord-Alge. Although I'm currently unable to locate the commercial cassette single dub Ed sent me a long time ago, I believe this mix appears on the duo's Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus - Greatest Hits CD (Edel 18205). Therefore, I went ahead and conducted an A/B comparison between it and the Look Sharp! CD (EMI 91098).

Although there is only a slight mix difference between the two, I discovered one significant discrepancy in particular... At the 1:49 mark during the verse "whatcha gonna tell your father", there is a distinct echo heard right after the word "father" on the Look Sharp! disc that isn't present on the Greatest Hits CD.

Ed, can you please review your cassette single copy of "Dressed for Success" once again and let us know if there is no echo after "father" at 1:49? If not, then the existing database comment next to the Greatest Hits CD should be changed from "LP length" to something along the lines of "45 version - cassette single length", while the comment for the Look Sharp! CD should be changed from "LP length" to "LP version".

paul...i do not hear any echo after 'father' at 1:49 on the
cassingle.....but, as confirmation, i will send you the
cassingle dub now for your review..

Thanks to some valuable assistance from Ed, I'm now able to confirm that the version of "Dressed for Success" on the Don't Bore Us, Get To The Chorus - Greatest Hits CD is indeed the 45 version and exactly matches the length of the cassette single, which runs 4:10. The commercial vinyl 45 is an early fade of the cassette single length but otherwise the same version.

This also means the Roxette Look Sharp! CD should have its associated comment revised from "LP length" to "LP version". The other remaining database CD entries containing "Dressed for Success" will need to be examined as I don't have any of them.

The "LP length and 45 mix", running about 4:11 and
lacking an echo on "father" at 1:49, is found on the
promo discs TuneUp Top40 #14 and TM's GoldDisc
1728.

It's likely the "Single Version", from track 1 of the
first promo CD single, DPRO 04295. It has a printed time
of 4:16.

EMI issued a second promo CD single, DPRO 04372, which
had "New Radio Mix" as track 1, with a printed time of
3:56.

I don't have either promo CD single to confirm actual run
times.

Ron, I have both promo CDs, but neither disc has printed times. Here are the details of my copies:

DPRO 04295
1. Single Version (4:13)
2. Look Sharp! Mix (4:51)

The "Single Version" on this promo starts off with "yeah, yeah, yeah" followed by drums and synthesizers. There is no echo on "father" at 1:49. The "Look Sharp! Mix" also starts off with "yeah, yeah, yeah," but the vocals echo to silence, and then an acoustic guitar part begins. This is not the LP version, despite it being called "Look Sharp! Mix."

DPRO 04372 ("REMIX" clearly indicated on back insert and disc)
1. New Radio Mix (3:56)
2. Success Mix (6:43)

It seems clear the single version was the 3:45 length without the echo at 1:49.

What would you consider to be the "radio" version? Which version did top 40 broadcast radio play most? The 3:45 true commercial single version / length, the LP version, the single mix / LP length, the New Radio Mix, or the Look Sharp! mix?

I feel like I played this a thousand times but my local AC ended up playing so many different versions that I'm now unsure what actually happened in 1989...

I am sorry if this should be obvious but in the above comments, I am
not explicitly understanding whether the vinyl 45 version is an early
fade of the full Lord-Alge single mix or if it instead was a fade of the
original (Look Sharp!) album version. Can someone confirm,
please and thank you!

My impression is that it's an early fade of the mix. The cassette would have the album-length version of the single mix.

Hopefully I'm not muddying the waters. :-)

For your question: I was pretty young in 1989, but when I never recall
hearing the New Radio Mix on-air when the single was current. Our
stations (Bham-Gadsden AL) either played the LP or single mix, but
with them being so similar, I dont know which.
