Pat:

Edtop40 claims Kool & the Gang's "Stone Love" on the Celebration: Best of 1979-1987 (Mercury 314522458) CD is not the 45 version as indicated in the 10th edition. Ed says although the version on the CD runs 3:54 just like the commercial 45, the two are very different mixes and are not simply differences in equalization. If you still have the 45 of "Stone Love", could you compare it to the Celebration CD and let us know your take on this?

I compared my commercial 45 (Mercury 888 292-7) to the
Celebration: Best Of... version and they are different mixes; the
Celebration: Best Of... version has a phase-shifter type of treatment
of the vocals and the synthesizers and a bit more echo. The version
on Everything's Kool & The Gang Greatest Hits And More is a very
similar mix to the Celebration: Best Of... but is of course longer
(4:34), with a longer intro.

Thanks, Paul. So it looks like the version of "Stone Love" appearing on the Celebration: Best of 1979-1987 CD would indeed be considered a remix, unless this mix was officially released on a DJ copy or the 12" single. I guess this also means the 45 version has yet to be released on CD.

does anyone know if the lp version of the song is similar to the 45 version and thus potentially could be edited down to match the 45's run time?

Ed, to answer your question from almost two years ago, the 45 cannot be re-created from the LP version. They are different mixes.

Is this the 7" mix or is it the remix that's popped up on a couple of collections, missing some horn overdubs?

Unfortunately, no, that's not the 45 mix. There are too many synth/horns in the intro, and not enough in the chorus.

I'm fairly certain this is the proper 7" mix.

I’m happy to report that the 45 version is on a UK Kool & The Gang compilation from 1991 - Anthology - 20 Greatest Tracks.

I rolled the dice on it primarily because it listed "Stone Love" with a duration of 3:56, versus the 3:54 alternate mix included on many of their compilations.

Unfortunately, it fades 3 seconds early.   In the 45 version there’s a snare at 3:53, followed by the lyrics "Me and you" and what sounds like "I love Stone..." just before fade-out. The Anthology version goes silent right after that snare at 3:53.

Two new Kool and the Gang CD album box sets were released by Edsel Records for the EU market in 2022. The second volume, The Albums Vol. 2 1979-1989, purports to contain the single version of
"Stone Love". Has anyone confirmed whether or not this is the correct version?

It's the same as the version NightAire linked to.

Eric, how are you? I heard the version you mention,
included in box 2022 and it fades at 3:53, not coinciding
with the times of version 45, I think it's a failed attempt
to recreate version 45. Other additional information is
that in the box the song has no description.

@mjb50 & kaqueno (Marcelo):

Thank you for the info.! I still may pick the box up as a nice way to collect the albums, but I will do so without the hope of snagging the right 45 version of "Stone Love" ;-)
